Oh that's really sad...I watched her for a few minutes this afternoon, and she was hunkered down on the eggs...but she was also calling out...probably asking him to come and give her a break...I do hope things work out here...

:danceegg: for the fourth egg.

For Appio & Vergine, she seems to be spending more time on the eggs at present; all we can do is watch and wait - and hope that at least some of the eggs are still viable :egg16:

There've been problems with the cam but now it's working fine. Are you trying at the right times Mick? It's only on from 9.00 am to 6.30 pm our time :egg9: .

Thank you Warbler. I was able to open the cams last night. I sure appreciate your updates and hope the best for this nest. Hatch should be any minute now...

Yes, the date is from 4 April.
Yesterday, a comment was made that Vergine should know if the eggs are viable or not and the fact that she's incubating with conviction is a hopeful sign. We'll know in just a few days.
Question for the experts: could hatching be delayed if incubation hasn't always been constant but enough to keep the eggs going? If so, by how many days - or is it impossible to tell?
Thanks :egg8:

Warbler, check out the dates at the Pittsburgh nest last year. Two different females laid eggs, with a long time in between. There was also a lot of time off the eggs. All 5 hatched!!

Thanks obxbarb! In fact we remember those nests and the happy surprise as each egg hatched :girlluv: . Let's hope the same happens to Appio & Vergine...

What's a little more worrying here is that the male doesn't appear to be co-operating and we're fairly sure that some of Vergine's absences are because she's going off to hunt for food. We're concerned about what could happen to the chicks if their arrival doesn't lead to a sea-change in the male's behaviour :egg16: .
The people in Rome will do all they can to help Vergine - they've already said this, but keeping chicks warm until their heat regulation system kicks in would probably mean removing them from the nest. We'll just have to wait and see what happens.

We're all sitting on pins because the first hatches are due at any time :egg5: :egg5: :egg5: and we're awfully afraid that we're going to miss Vergine's first (again) but the cam should be back on tomorrow :egg8: .

Thanks Mick, they are beautiful, aren't they? :flirty:
