Cam 10: There are just 2 kestrels fighting with each other :egg14:

Here's a clip, it's a compressed view of the first 80 minutes (quite the "bitch fight" ...)

The intruder escaped after 3.5 hours with several long stand-offs (for more details, see the vid description at YT).

That was horrible...I'm gonna have to go and read....I do hope both females are ok...and especially the eggs...they were over in that area for quite some time...I noticed how the male definitely didn't stick around...

The 2nd egg rolled out of sight (under the webcam).
The female Lesser Kestrel spent 4 hours standing near the window, then left, around 6 PM local time, peeked inside several times around 7 PM and went to roost elsewhere.

The intriguing thing however is that most probably the same male (well recognisable, note his 2nd calender year plumage, i.e. not fully moulted from juvenile pattern) was seen before the fight in nestbox # 7. And also afterwards with a female, for at least 20 min. - with the intruder? So he was bigamist? And divided his time and prey deliveries over 2 females, hence female in # 10 waiting in vain long times at the entrance? Still speculation, but could well be. Means we've got to keep an eye on # 7 as well ....

I'm really sad I can't watch this cam... I'll just rely on the updates from all those who can.

What a frightening encounter today in nest #10. Thanks for the update and the compressed video, Bosuil.

I sure hope that both females resolved their nest issues without getting badly hurt.

Still unsure, but I have a feeling the female of # 7 will give up the eggs.

This just in from Menachem Adar of this Lesser Kestrel project: it turns out that the female who nested in # 10 lost her partner. He thinks the new young male (who appeared a few days ago) today sort of invited the new female to nest 10 by bringing in prey (which he didnot deliver to the female of # 10). The latter was seen chasing the former the day before.

Instead of snapshots, here's an animation:

Ruud - Thanks for that great video. It was so sweet!

Ferenz - I agree with KF: Your second picture of the kestrel at Wiler is fabulous!

Beautiful snapshots in the previous posts! Forgot to check Wilerfeld - am almost jealous of the kestrel's view ... top location!

In nest # 10 in Elyakim, a 3rd egg was laid yesterday, it seems the male finally decided - he was seen bringing prey to females in both nest # 7 and # 10 ....

Yesterday he was already checking out incubation position (remember, Lesser Kestrels very actively share the incubation) and Menachem from the Israeli site caught him in the act this morning:
