Banding here is always fun to watch. I am always amazed at how big the nest is and of course, how big the eaglets are. I think last year they started before the appointed time, so be sure to tune in early so you don't miss a thing!!!

obxbarb, are you going to be there???

Video: Relaxing Afternoon at Norfolk Eagle Nest

With so much drama at most of the eagle nests, a calm day is valued and welcomed.

Recorded at 2:37 PM local time

1st egg: 2/3
2nd egg: 2/6
3rd egg: 2/9
1st hatch: 3/13
2nd hatch: 3/15
3rd hatch: 3/17

We've banded birds we've released at IBRRC in rescue. To band birds with a USFWS band, one must be licensed. And the bands have serial numbers, a unique one for each bird. Also, the bands are species specific. You cannot put a Brown Pelican band on a White Pelican. You can't put a Canada Goose band on a Brant Goose.

Here's a video of a Western Grebe getting a band:

When the eaglets are banded, you'll see the kind of bands used for them. Entirely different from the above.

The best part of wildlife rehabilitation is the banding, followed by the release. :)

Thanks, KF, for the heads-up about the banding here tomorrow.

For timing if anyone wants to watch:

The banding of the three Norfolk Botanical Garden bald eagle chicks is planned to take place on April 21, 2011 beginning about 9:00am. The actual banding should take place about 9:30.

Geez, it would help if I'd look at a calendar and see that today is the 18th, not the 21st. :duh:
Have a great time, obxbarb!

The eaglets are mostly sleeping in this warm weather. Dad is continuing to build his fortress :egg6: :egg6:
