Being that I/we can't watch all night it's hard to tell what's going on. But this morning I see at least 2 dead rodents in the box. They had to come from somewhere?

If rodents are still in the box then everyone must be full - good news!! :egg119:

harrishhawk-I didn't remember the barn owl info on Wildwatch BO nest so I tried
to go back to our old forum and look for the posts...
Found this info...
~2008~ A different owl other then the parents attack the nest,
and a owlet was injured. It died in the nest-viewed by camwatchers.

On the 2008 WildWatchCam site, it says:

Over the last several days many of our viewers have witnessed owl behavior that seems difficult to understand as what seemed like a ‘functional’ brood of barn owls have begun to eat each other. WildWatchCams capture nature as it unfolds and we do not as a rule interfere with natural events, however we do strive to learn from what our hidden cameras are seeing.

~~I believe we also had a situation (two different owl boxes) -not sure of the year- with the owls having been infected with parasites...the little ones died.
PLease correct me if I have this wrong.

They're eating the rodent that was in the corner. I've seen this one and another one eating it. I haven't heard back from Chuck ... if I do you'll all be the first to know!

I'm thinking ... maybe something happened to the female?? So only the male is dropping off food at night..? But that wouldn't account for 2 of them dying over the weekend ... unless he wasn't bringing enough food.

Thank you very much PattiO, this news relieves me !

In this picture, I see another dead chick:
Image

I feel that you're right, the mother should have been there to take care of those 3 chicks that were much smaller than the other 4 and still needed support for feeding. Like you, I feel there is something unusual happened to the mother and now the father is alone to manage the supply of survivors.

I think that may be the same one we saw yesterday ... just got moved around. I still see 4 right now. Although the live cam doesn't seem to be working at the moment ... at least for me it isn't.

hi kittenface! Yes, some of us believe this is a new male. Jack was not very attentive, Wing would be crouching and he would not mate often, and was barely adequate supplying her with food. This male is very amorous, mates like crazy, and has brought in treats where one day there was actually a pile in the pantry! A few viewers think Jack might be grown up now. I think it is a new male. At any rate, Cornell did, and gave a contest to name him. His name is Beau. So now we have Wing and Beau.

And now we have an EGG! :egg5:

New update on the WDW Owl cam page ........ I guess this answers our questions/concerns .. :egg18:

Quote:
Update Late April, 2011

The female barn owl has left the nest box. This is normal at a point where the nest box environment is fairly stable and the owlets are capable of maintaining stable body temperatures and can feed themselves. Both adult owls will conduct regular food drops of rodents in the nest box, assuming the rodent population is adequate. A danger at this transition time is the older siblings picking on and even eating their younger and smaller siblings. This is what has happened over the weekend April 16-17when the youngest owlet was consumed by its siblings.

The act of siblicide–although difficult to observe– is a common outcome for a meat eating bird (like barn owls) with asynchronous hatching, where eggs are laid and hatched at different times. This allows for easy siblicide as the first chick is older and much larger than the last. Ecological studies suggest that siblicide allows for the greatest number of owlets to survive to match the available food supply. Low food resources increase conflict among siblings which leads to a greater chance of siblicide. The end result of the situation is that a few strong and well-fed owlets survive instead of many weaker birds.

You may not see the adult owls again this nesting season since they most often drop rodents into the nest box and continue to hunt as the owlets are consuming vast numbers of rodents as they continue to grow. Please take the time to understand and explain this ecological act and behavior to yourself and others – particularly young viewers.

:clapegg: NESTKAST Live has laid an egg! Yippee! This is the cam in the Netherlands. It was laid yesterday according to their picture dated. Didnt translate page yet. Here is a pic, which is hard to get because the shag is really deep there and mom wasnt getting up much. The light hit her tailfeathers and it looks like she has 2 heads, but she is facing cam with head down, but its the only shot I could get. Yippee!!

And another egg was laid yesterday April 29, but Alphen a/d Rijn mama owl is still hiding them.

Snapshot of 1rst egg from the site:

More Barn Owl news: the Israeli cam in Nir David went on line unnoticed and mrs. Owl is already incubating 5 or 6 eggs at least, I just noticed.
Current link:

The other cam in Tirat Zvi (in the water tower) is still off line.

Info in English about both nestcams at

Edit: Nir David had 2 eggs on April 18.
Edit: link to Nir David webcam updated.
