News report

NORFOLK

Biologists and Norfolk Botanical Garden staff are checking the area around the garden’s bald-eagle nest to try to locate the female after an eagle collided with a plane this morning at Norfolk International Airport.
Airport Deputy Executive Director Robert Bowen said Reese Lukei, a local eagle expert, examined the dead eagle and identified it as a 15-year-old female that’s almost certainly the mother of the three eaglets nesting at the garden.
Already, the male eagle has been spotted, said Kelly Gaita, public relations manager for the garden.

The strike happened shortly before 9 a.m., Bowen said. The US Airways flight from Philadelphia hit the eagle either as it was flying over Lake Whitehurst or over the runway, Bowen said.
He added that the eagle apparently had just caught a fish because a fish was found near the bird’s remains.
Bowen said there were no injuries among the 21 passengers on board, but the left landing gear sustained some damage.
An airplane struck and killed an eagle just two weeks ago at the airport. Other eagle strikes occurred in 2005 and 2002.

The female was at the nest this morning feeding the three hatchlings shortly before 8 a.m., according to the moderated blog on the WVEC Eagle Cam site. The three eaglets were removed from the nest last week, banded and returned. They hatched last month.

:sosad2 How terribly awful for this to happen at this nest. They are great parents, and were together for so long. Raised so many eaglets together over the years. How many pictures the photographers at NBG have posted of this beautiful female eagle mom. Im so sad for all my fellow viewers of the nest, it seems this year things are happening in almost every nest or cam I love, it is not a good year. What an impact this will have around the world, and at the gardens, among the eagles. I am hoping Dad can continue to feed them the last few weeks before fledging. You know there are plenty at the Rainbow Bridge waiting to meet and greet this beautiful eagle with such a lifetime record. :beathrt:

I am going to remain hopeful here even though it might seem impossible.

Words cannot express how I feel at this moment for dad and the chicks and all at the gardens.
they have been a part of everyone's lives for years .

I am looking at my calendar now and i have coasters also. :egg10:

Tears are flowing like a river right now. I am reading the chat room on the eagle cam and have not heard from CCB yet. I can't imagine how Reese is feeling right now. I have had the cam up all day, and I wish that dad would come by with a fish. Mom was the boss, but he is the best male I have ever seen. The eaglets are starting to eat on their own, so I think he'll be able to manage.

Here's my last pic of mom from yesterday:

Thank you so much for your last pic Barb. You and Reese are in my thoughts. All my sympathy extended to all eagle watchers. This is hard to hold in your mind.

From the NBG on the cam page.

Norfolk Botanical Garden:
This morning an adult bald eagle was struck and killed by an incoming airplane at Norfolk International Airport. It is believed that this bird was the female of the nesting pair from Norfolk Botanical Garden (NBG). The strike occurred sometime between 8:30 and 8:50 a.m. These eagles were well known through the Norfolk Botanical Garden Eagle Cam provided by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF), Norfolk Botanical Garden, and WVEC, and have been at NBG since 2003.

According to Stephen Living, VDGIF biologist, and Reese Lukei, a research associate with the Center for Conservation Biology (CCB), “We are fairly certain that this is the Norfolk Botanical Garden female eagle due to her physical characteristics, size and the fact that she has not been seen at the nest since the strike.”
This year the pair of eagles has produced three chicks at that nest site. Biologists with the VDGIF, CCB, and the staff at NBG will continue to monitor the nest and are working to ensure the health of the eaglets.

I can't contain the tears. This is such shocking news. Many hugs to those who loved Mom around the world but mostly for those who were lucky enough to interact with her in person via scopes and cams at the Garden.

Shock is the right word SGB. Just no words except I wish all the people I care about here would not have to suffer this. And most of all, sorrow that the mother eagle had to suffer this death.

:sosad2 Shocked and saddened by this devastating news . . . And worried about the Eaglets. Will Dad be able to do it alone ?
I found this nest in 2007 and introduced it to the Maine Bald Eagle cam community. Kept an eye on things every year although I didn't post much any more.
May the people in Norfolk support each other in this time of grief. And that they will be able to keep the last three Eaglets of Mom safe and healthy so they can fledge successfully.

Comment From Marsh Hen on the Norfolk chatroom -
"And He will lift you up on Eagle's Wings, bear you at the break of dawn, make you to shine like the sun and hold you in the palm of His hand" Go with God, beautiful Eagle mother...

(((Hugs))) to our wonderful friend Barb/obxbarb who was at the banding last week - Thinking of you Barb, jim, the Biologists with the VDGIF, CCB, the staff at NBG and all who have watched this nest for years. Our/my heartfelt sympathy.

I've been watching every so often when the other two eagle nests are napping. This is most horrible. I really feel for the regular followers of this nest.I do hope something will be done to help if it's needed
