NORFOLK -- A plane landing at Norfolk International Airport struck and killed an eagle Tuesday morning, and it has been confirmed that it was one of the very popular eagles from the Norfolk Botanical Garden.

Tuesday afternoon, Stephen A. Living, a wildlife biologist with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries confirmed it is indeed one of the nesting pair from the Norfolk Botanical Garden.

These eagles were well known through the Norfolk Botanical Garden Eagle Cam provided by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF), Norfolk Botanical Garden and WVEC, and have been at NBG since 2001 and have been featured on the Eagle Cam on WVEC.com since 2006.

Eagle Cam watcher Linda Eszenyi drove from Northern Virginia in hopes of getting a personal glimpse of the pair and their eaglets.

“They told me and I just had to go have a cry. I was so hurt and disappointed, not for just me but for everybody that watches,” Eszenyi said.

Reese Lukei, a research associate with the Center for Conservation Biology (CCB), has monitored and blogged about these eagles for ten years.

“It’s about like losing one of your kids,” Lukei described.

Moments before the confirmation, Living said "We are fairly certain it's the female from Norfolk Botanical Garden based on the location, the physical characteristics of the eagle and the fact that the female hasn't been seen on the nest since early this morning."

Biologists with the VDGIF, CCB, and the staff at NBG will continue to monitor the nest and are working to ensure the health of the eaglets.

DGIF management and other wildlife experts met Tuesday at the Botanical Garden to discuss the status of the eagle nest and whether the male can meet the needs of the eaglets.

“We are going to be watching this nest very closely over the coming days to see if he is able to provide regular feeding for the chicks,” Lukei stated.

The adult male eagle has been seen in a nearby tree Tuesday afternoon but has not been seen at the nest.

"These eaglets are right on the edge of being able to feed themselves if something is brought to the nest, but we will be watching to see if the male helps them eat. If he doesn't, they will likely have to come out of the nest,"

said Lukei.

Lukei said there are cases of single adult eagles raising broods of young. He added that a decision will be made by Wednesday about what will be done with the three eaglets.

"They had a breakfast this morning, a big catfish, but with these temperatures we're having, if they are not fed eventually, they will become dehydrated," said Lukei.

Lukei said that if the eaglets are removed from the nest, they could be placed in a foster nest or relocated to a wildlife rehab center. A foster nest is a nest with eaglets of the same age. Lukei said this approch has been successful with other birds.

The final decision about the eaglets will be made by the DGIF, which has regulatory authority in Virginia.

The plane strike happened sometime between 8:30 and 8:50 a.m. A US Airways regional jet coming from Philadelphia was preparing to land at 8:50 when the pilot reported the bird strike.

Shank says the eagle was reportedly feeding at Lake Whitehurst with another eagle when the strike was reported.

The plane landed safely and no one was hurt, said Shank. He added that there was minor damage to the aircraft.

Shank told WVEC.com that this is the second eagle strike in several weeks and fourth in 10 years; the others occurring in 2005 and 2001.

Shank said the airport is working with the US Fish and Wildlife office to see if anything can be done to protect airline passengers and wildlife.

Latest post by WVEC on the chat is that a decision will be made tomorrow about whether to remove the eaglets from the nest... :sosad

This is truly devastating news about the Norfolk mom. I don't have the words to express my sorrow, so I can't even begin to imagine what Barb, Jim, and all the others who closely followed and cared for these magnificent eagles are going through right now. Just know that the rest of us here on the forum share in your sadness.

You know, I've been watching the cam and reading the chat posts...just made me cry harder...They panned the cam, seeing if Dad was close by...I know the kids will be taken care of, but my heart is breaking for Dad. The report was that the pilot saw 2 eagles, one got out of the way and the other one didn't...I just wonder what dad is doing...is he calling out or flying to the river looking for her? If I allow my imagination to go wild, I can just picture him searching everywhere for her...breaks my heart..

Comments from Reese ......

Quote:
First I want to express my appreciation for all your concerns about the eagles at NBG. This has certainly been a trying day for all of us

We have some answers about what happened. there is just very little doubt that the adult killed today is the NBG female.

Our principal concern now is for the three chicks and their safe future.

Unlike the 2008 eaglet that was taken to the Wildlife Center of VA, these three chicks are very healthy.

Any decisions about their future will focus on their being raised in a manner that will assure that they will be able to be released into the wild

A decision will likely be made by tomorrow
These chicks need about another week to be able to feed for themselves
There are records of a singe adult successfully raising chicks of this age
I would not expect the male to attempt to find a mate until next fall in time for the next breeding season

The folks in Norfolk will do what is best for these eaglets, and that is so comforting, but my wish is that Dad can continue to provide meals and that this sweet family can stay together in their comfortable surroundings until they are ready to leave. May Dad and those humans who loved Mom find comfort and peace. This is my prayer.

I am so very sorry about the tragic loss of the beautiful female eagle at this nest. After all the years she has been at this nest, her loss leaves such a great void. I feel so bad for her mate and for the eaglets.

Dad seems to be doing his best to care for the eaglets. Like SusanE, I hope that he will be able to continue raising the eaglets and that the family can stay together until the eaglets are ready to be on their own. I am glad that the people in Norfolk are watching over them, and that they will receive good care, whatever decision is made about their future.

I am not sure if i should have done this or not but if it helps public awareness it may be a good thing.

Since the plane was outbound from philly to norfolk, i have informed the local media about this tragedy by sending to them the bulletin from the wvec site to all four major network affiliates here locally. Will keep my ears open to see if there is any mention of this here in philly and post what i hear. if anything that is

Hello to everyone. The love and affection felt for our beloved NBG Eagle Mom
is beyond words. She is a beautiful eagle who brought much joy
and intrigue to thousands! She will be sorely missed and remembered forever.
This is one of the last pictures I had taken of her that I want to share!
Image
There was a small group of us gathered at the nest this afternoon and evening
sharing our emotions, and it was emotional!!!! As you know Dad returned with
a fish in the early evening and those of us on the ground who watched him come in
with it were over joyed. We pray that continues. If anyone wishes, feel free to right
click this image and use it how you wish. Please say a prayer for our beloved eagles!

Jim

I have just heard about the tragic loss of the beautiful female in Norfolk, and am still in a state of shock. I started following this nest only a few months ago, was lucky enough to be watching when the first egg hatched, and just watched the banding last week. Although I've never seen her for real like some of you have, I feel your loss deeply. I was relieved to read that the male came in with a fish this afternoon, and that the wildlife people will be keeping a close eye on the eaglets.
