I am so sorry Barb. I could not watch. I think they should have left one and I will always feel that way.

I am glad that they intervene on the behalf of the eagles here, but this time one should have been left.

Do not get me wrong, they are the best at this site. We have learned so much, and I know we will learn so much more in the future, but sometimes you have to be quick to make a decision and I think they should have thought about it one more day here. Dad was providing so no danger to chicks.

Please do not think ill of me for this comment, but my fear is for dad. to lose so much so soon, my be too much.

My only consolation is that they will be well cared for, and will survive to carry on Mom's Genes. My heart breaks for Dad, as he lost his mate, and offspring in just a little over a day.

I think He could have raised 1 check by himself. We all know that eagles do have emotions & they do feel. Proof, Hornby eagles in /06 when Pa cried. I was lucky to have that video saved

Thanks to all of you who provided coverage...I'm sorry...I just could not watch...my heartache is with Dad. I really wanted them to leave him just one of the kids...We know how to comfort each other, but how does one comfort an Eagle who has lost his entire family... :cryinggirl: Hugs to you Barb and Jim and Libby and all others that experience this nest so closely..

At WCV the eaglets’ health will be evaluated and monitored closely throughout their treatment. They will be placed in an artificial nest that has been constructed in the Center’s 200-foot eagle flight cage. Other adult Bald Eagle patients may also be in this enclosure. While the chicks will be separated by a physical barrier from direct contact with other eagles, the eaglets will be able to see other eagles flying and feeding. As they begin to fledge, the barrier will be removed and the young eagles will have full access to the long enclosure, to build their wing strength and to learn to fly. The goal would be to get the young eagles ready for release back into the wild this summer.

Pat, thanks for recording and we will look for your video later.

This is sad, but I have to trust that removal will give these birds the best chance for survival.

Barb, are they being taken where you volunteer?

SGB. thank you for changing our header. It is lovely.

Source Ed Clark, WCV: ...While the male may be able to feed the babies for now, those chicks will triple in size (and appetite) over the next two months. There can be no reduct...ion in nutritional intake during this rapid growth period or the babies could suffer developmentally. If there is not enough food to go around, the stronger chicks will either push the weaker out of the nest, or kill it.

This decision was not an easy one for those involved.

Just posted on the discussion:

2012 ‘Garden of Eagles’ calendar will be dedicated to the memory of the Norfolk Botanical Garden female - and will include photos not only of this year, but will include photos of her from past years. Viewers who would like to receive the informational e-mail on pre-ordering the 2012 'Garden of Eagles' Calendar can go to the Garden of Eagles website (located on the lower right hand side on WVEC website) and use the contact form to place your name on the mailing list. The photos for 2012 will include the 2011 nesting season - both in the nest, their growing up at the Wildlife Center of Virginia and their fledging. Information for pre-orders will go out next week - with calendar delivery the latter part of August. The calendar will not be printed until early August - to assure that photos of the fledglings will be included.

My friend in Austria, Ilse, filmed the removal. I want to wait for Pat to post but here are the links in case she doesn't.

I'm sorry Pat. I didn't film. I wish they would have left the male one of his eaglets. I can't imagine an airplane hitting her. He lost everything he had in 24 hours.

I am so sorry for everyone who feels this heartache. I am so sad.
