Jim,

Thank you for including us in the Four Drum Native American Group's ceremony to honor the female and strengthen the male. It was very moving to hear the drums and the voices rising in unison. Do you know what the tribal identity is of this group?

Thank you everyone for your thoughts and links.

Reese has posted a nice tribute to mom and a paper from Bryan Watts on the development stages of eagle chick growth in the Chesapeake Bay. It is an interesting read. The eaglets were at 90% of their full development when they were moved. http://eaglenest.blogs.wm.edu/

Very, very interesting read obxbarb. Interesting about the 3 fish.

Jim, thank you so much for the video's and pictures of that very special ceremony.
I can't find the words to express what I feel exactly but seeing and hearing the Native Americans pay tribute to Mom does give me a feeling of comfort and closure.

Jim, thank you for the Facebook link. When I think of Mom or check in on the eaglets, I think of the drums and voices in the ceremony. I think DEF is right in that it had some effect, a comfort somehow.

Here's is an update from Wildlife Center, Tues. May 3rd

The WCV team caught all three eaglets today for a scheduled weigh-in. It’s important to the staff to keep tabs on the eaglets’ weights to ensure that all are receiving their fair share of food. The rehab staff will also use the new weights to recalculate the amount of food given to the eaglets throughout the day.

Once caught and weighed, the eaglets spent a few additional minutes in an enclosed tub so that the rehab staff could clean the nest area. The walls surrounding the nest were washed. Wildlife rehabiliator Suzy Doell also spent a few extra minutes picking small fish and goose bits out of the nest. This will help keep flies and other insects from being attracted to the nest.

#11-0476 — NV — also had another blood sample taken. This blood was immediately re-checked in the Center’s lead analyzer machine. The results: the lead level came in at “low”, which means too low to measure. That means that the lead resolve on its own and no treatment is neeed.

As for the weights — a bit of a surprise today! Today the eaglets weighed in at:

#11-0474: NZ: 3.41 kg (lost a little weight)

#11-0475: NX: 3.88 kg (gained 400 grams)

#11-0476: NV: 4.015 kg! This is a 1 kg increase from Friday.
The smallest eaglet is now the heaviest!

jim, I finally had time to watch your videos of the Native American ceremony at the Garden for Mom. Very spiritual and comforting and calming. Thank you. Yes, as SGB said, maybe it was Mom who flew over . . .

I'm glad everyone enjoyed Four Rivers Drum. They did a great job for Mom.
Dad was sighted Sunday night a few times. Last night he went into the nest for a quick second and flew
down eagle alley. A few minutes later a 4 year old sub adult flew over the nest area.
This morning Dad was in the 2010 camera tree for a little bit.
So that brings us to 5:15 this afternoon. This eagle is not Dad and was circling over a
part of NBG know as the Butterfly Garden. This area is not in the immediate area
of the nest. He was hunting. At one point he lowered his talons
but never came down. The last picture is another adult who joined with this eagle and
they flew out of sight. Ya just never know.

Thanks for the updates Jim! Gosh, another eagle pair without a nest in the gardens? I guess their nest failed somewhere else. Hmmmm.... Glad to know dad is still around the nests. I'm sure he will find a new girl pretty quickly. We just had a falcon lose its mate in the midwest and has a new one in less than two weeks!

This is Dad from yesterday afternoon from two different areas of
NBG. The first picture is him heading behind an area called the
Enchanted Forest. The next four he is perched across the water
from the Native Plant Garden. I was with him for about a half hour
before he left. I am out of town until next thursday
but will check in when I get back.

WAYNESBORO --

Ed Clark denies any notion he's been taken hostage.

Instead, the president of the Wildlife Center of Virginia said he's accepted that 150,000 people watch his every interaction with three eaglets recently rescued and moved to Waynesboro.

Through a continuous online video feed, a global group has taken interest in the well-being of the fuzz-ball birds and raised thousands of dollars for their care.

For months, the Norfolk Botanical Garden used a camera to broadcast the hatching of the eaglets. The birds, including mother and father, became Web celebrities. At any given hour, at least 2,000 people watched the eagles and typed live comments into a chat room.

So when the wheels of a U.S. Airways jet struck and killed the mother, the online fans "erupted," Clark said.

The outpouring of grief and support led to a memorial service for the female bird in Norfolk. More than 100 people attended, including a Native American drum group.

With the fan base mobilized, attention turned to the eaglets, which naturalists determined should be moved.

"We have come to understand that they are a true force of nature, or for nature, whichever way you want to look at it," Clark said from his office this week.

The eaglets moved to the center in Waynesboro. With them came the masses, demanding a camera and constant access.

The move also sparked a fundraiser through the Chase Community of Giving project. Within a week, the eagle fund got enough votes to reach the national top-10 list for the project, earning $25,000.

On May 19, another round of voting begins with a top award of $500,000.

Anna Davis, 60, of Staunton, said she started following the birds online in March.

"Usually when I come in (to work) I'll bring up the eagle cam and make it a smaller window on the screen," Davis said. "It is very addictive."

Debbi Skluzak of Norfolk helps moderate the Wildlife Center of Virginia's online chat room. She said many people consider the online birds to be pets.

"I might have 10 cameras that are small that are all over the place on the (computer) screen," she said. "I think a lot of people would rather watch this live cam, and watch these eagles as they grow up, than watch television."

Skluzak said she's in the process of printing more than 6,000 calendars to memorialize the eaglets' killed mother.

Clark said the arrival of the eaglets to the Wildlife Center caused so much attention the organization's website crashed. Employee email accounts overloaded.

"It's a truly sincere commitment to these birds," Clark said. "It may be over the top, but it's an investment."

Clark said the online chat room and increased attention connects more people to nature in a month than the facility's traditional education programs do in a year.

"We feel an enormous amount of responsibility to keep these people," Clark said, "who are so genuinely … connected to these birds."
