Updated, 5:27 p.m. | A medical rescue team, which spent Thursday observing Violet, the red-tailed hawk and new mother with an injured leg, decided not to try to take her from her nest high above Washington Square Park in order to treat her.

The wildlife specialists said that Violet was functioning well enough — and that the risks to her and her week-old hatchling were serious enough — that intervention could not be justified.

Farther down in the update...Dr. Bunting was reluctant to offer a prognosis for Violet's leg. The swelling, she said, could have been caused in part by the fact that she has spent so much time lying down on the nest, and "could go down as she starts moving around - or it could progress."

Video: Violet Feeds Her Hungry Chick

He's so impatient to be fed, he almost falls out of the nest! Feeding lasts about 20 minutes, and then she puts him to bed. Violet limps around the nest on her sore foot.

Recorded 8:05 PM local time

1st hatch: 5/6

I posted this on WOW becasue some wre wondering what would happen if she lost one leg or part of it.

they were told that if an eagle wee brought in like this they would euthanize it becasue they needed both feet to hunt.

Well I beg to differ. Dundas , a peregrine in Canada, beat the odds. Never say never. This is where I get my optimism from when it comes to nature. there are so many tragedies but we forget about the successes.

so if a peregrine can survive so can a hawk and an eagle. these raptors have a reserve that is next to none.

Well, I think that's what I'm really worried about...I Just don't know how it can get better. I just hope she isn't in too much pain...

I think we're going to learn alot by watching Zephyr at Southbend. I know there are some that are concerned about how he'll be able to hunt for the babies after they hatch. So far he looks great. I just can't imagine what he had to go through when he lost his foot a few months ago...these birds appear to be so resilient but when you need your feet to survive, that's when heart makes them stand out.

I hope she is not in to much pain either SGB.

I posted my articles to give hope . I guess the same is for the human species. Sometimes it takes a lot of heart and determination , but you have to have it.

Hawk Cam | The Christening :girlluv:

Updated, May 18 | The voters have spoken. The baby hawk, at least as far as humans are concerned, has a name

Video: Violet Struggles with her Swollen Foot

Violet feeds Pip, and she must be feeling pain from her swollen foot. When she's ready to leave, she uses her beak, instead of her talons on her right foot, to carry the prey to her cache. She doesn't use the talons on her left foot for this job, as she needs a good foot for landing. Another thought: her right foot may be numb, so it doesn't work as it should.

Record around 1 PM local time

I think the choice was: save Violet or save Pip. They chose to save Pip. Perhaps they can try to trap Violet later? After Pip fledges? I don't know how they'd do this, but hope they try. That foot is going to die unless the tight band is removed.

Who says I'm calm??? :gaah:

Well, yes, I guess I am because I realize what's at stake. Rescuing Violet might have resulted in her being euthanized if her foot could not be "fixed." And there was talk of young Pip being euthanized or raising him as an education bird.

At least one of them will have a future, based on the decision made.

When the injury is caused by the action of humans (in this case the tight band), permission is normally granted to rescue the animal. But there are other considerations here, as we have seen.

Damn, it's a hard life for wildlife.

Answers About Pip and Violet
This week, Dr. Elizabeth Bunting, a wildlife veterinarian at the Animal Health Diagnostic Center at Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine, and other experts will be responding to readers’ questions about Pip, the red-tailed hawk hatchling, or eyas, who emerged from the egg on May 6 in a nest on a 12th-floor ledge at New York University — and about Pip’s mother, Violet, about whose injured leg many of you have expressed concern.

I think the talking may be associated with another cam I was watching? As far as I know, the Retail cam has no sound. A mystery. I had my computer sound turned off when I previewed the video before uploading, so I think I'll mute it and upload it again. I did hear talking on the White Rock eagle cam. Workers, perhaps a construction crew? And a woman's voice.

--edited to add--- A muted version of the video was uploaded again & I edited the post on the preceding page.
