First hatch in the nest in Nir David, Israel - no screen capture yet - too far away, too vague, hardly visible, but there was an egg shell yesterday and I just heard the little one and saw it move for a second! We donot even know how many eggs there are ... Whenever she gets up, she stands between the cam and the nestpit ...

Finally some images from this nest - Mom leaves the chick(s?) and eggs (2?) for a while and 'things start moving' but it is very far away from the cam:

Barn Owls Nir David - in the 38 degr. C heat (that's 100 F) of this afternoon down in the Jordan valley (200 m below sea level - low humidity).

There are 4 chicks now. Still not sure how many eggs have been laid in total. The eldest chick is now 12 or 13 days old, the youngest very young, but carefully fed by the female, while the 2 oldest were apparently already well fed. She kept trying and trying and encouraged the 2 smallest ones to eat.

The cam position has been changed, and the image is closer up to the corner where the chicks are. Clip of female feeding the 2 smaller chicks:

Yes! Hatch at Heligan! Just watched and just saw a tiny chick move under her - but too shortly to make a snapshot.

Barn Owl Nir David - strange prey item (seems bi-color, mouse like, sort of striped) - female just moved it, it's now in front (for us) of the largest chick, who sits to the right of Mom:

(If anyone is watching - I'd be interested to know what you think it is - stream here: )

Barn Owl Heligan - still only 1 hatch

:loveshow: Have to post a couple pics of our beloved Wing and her 3 owlets. Number 1 and 2 are close in size, 3 was catching up to number 2 (he is 5 days behind?) as Wing was feeding them all individually. But the last couple days, 1 and 2 have gotten most of the food. They keep falling on 3, or their wings knock him over to the volerail, and he gets "stuck" there for a while. He is a little trooper and I hope he can hang in there, but no promises. They are all adorable though, so here is a couple pics. I had to force myself to stop, they are so funny falling all over each other, like bobbleheads do

Active little bobbleheads!

:flirty: :flirty: :flirty: OK folks, I cant stop! Here are a couple more pics of Wing's brood. You can see the smallest stretching up closest to the volerail, but believe me, he is pretty tiny. Wing spent some time last night feeding him alone. Hope she can keep it up

Number 1 is on the left, 2 and 3 on right

Tiniest is closest to the volerail, stretching up to catch mom's attention!

:loveshow: :loveshow: :loveshow: Just so in love with them!

:sosad :sosad :sosad Some sad news - a snake has gotten into Wing's box in Italy, TX once AGAIN. It appears to have killed the largest owlet, but Wing was in the box at the time and put a hurting on the snake and threw it out the box. Number 2 and Tiny are apparently ok. From posts, this happened around 1am TX time. Wing dragged the oldest over, sitting on it to try to warm it as it got cold. For over an hour she tried to revive it, preening and such from the posts. Later, she recycled him. Beau has made something like 4 more deliveries since the attack, and checked out the box and stayed with Wing inside for a while. There is plenty of foodin the box for now. Wing has calmed down, but on guard. Cant believe this happened again to our beloved Wing, after all the trauma last year and that snake almost killed her too.

I just cannot believe this happened again....I don't know how one could even snake proof an area like that...Bless their hearts....I am so glad that Wing was at least able to throw the snake out of the box...and at least save herself and the 2 ....Can you imagine the horror if you had been watching the cam at that time.

And another sad story - seems the owls at Nir David can't find enough prey - after one of the 2 smallest of the 4 owlets died and was eaten several days ago, the next smallest has died from hunger today and is being eaten now (no parent around) ... The difference in size was really big (think either egg # 3 never hatched or 3rd hatchling died early on) - although as I posted before, mother fed tiny ones explicitly (mostly after 2 largest had stuffed their stomachs and didnot compete for food anymore).
