Sorry to hear of this. The pics in the news article were heart wrenching. Habitat and plentiful food sources dwindle in my neck of the woods each year. I am referring to the salmon runs and explosive hi-tech development.

Just my opinion, Paul Allen...

This is a problem on the west coast also. Eagles are dying. I do not know what one has to do.

All wild animals need adequate and uncontaminated habitats in order to survive. With the encroachment of highways, housing developments, golf courses, and businesses, these habitats are shrinking. Dams decrease or eliminate the flow of water in rivers. And pollution also takes its toll.

Video: Doomed Maine Eagle Nest?

Things seem to be going from bad to worse. The female no longer sits on the eggs and has made only brief stops at the nest. Dad, on the other hand, defends the nest and incubates the eggs. But he can't do it alone.

Recording ends at 6:45 PM local time.

Two eggs in the nest
1st egg: 3/24
2nd egg: 3/27
Expect hatching to begin 4/28 (maybe...)

I am still optimistic here.

I guess I'm cautiously optimistic. I keep watching the nest, with hope.

I wonder whether these are the same eagles who occupied this nest in 2007...

Video: Madame Maine Won’t Incubate the Eggs

We haven't seen Mom incubating the eggs for a week. Dad is doing it on his on, except for the times he had to leave the nest. You can hear her plaintive cries in this video. My guess is she's frightened to come into the nest and settle down on the eggs.

She is probably in the nest tree, out of sight of the camera. Dad leaves, and it sounds like they are briefly together off-camera. Then he returns and settles back on the eggs.

Recorded at 4:45 PM, local time.

1st egg: 3/24
2nd egg: 3/27

Expect hatching to begin 4/28 (maybe)

Officials: 4 eaglets in Richmond nest
The Associated Press

RICHMOND — A pair of nesting bald eagles on Maine's Swan Island has produced the first documented case of four eaglets in the same nest in the state's history.

Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife biologist Kendall Marden says the eagles had unsuccessful nesting attempts over the past two years before producing four eaglets at the Swan Island Wildlife Management Area in the Kennebec River near Richmond.

Maine officials say there have been only three other documented cases of four eaglets in a single nest in the United States.

As recently as 40 years ago, bald eagles were battling against extinction.

The bald eagle was removed from Maine's list of threatened and endangered species in 2007 and there are now more than 500 nesting pairs in the state.
