Many thanks for the beautiful images Jim (!!!) These are the closest and clearest images that I have seen yet. She is exceptionally beautiful. We can expect gorgeous portraits of this lady.

Norfolk Botanical Garden/Eagle Tribute Plaza

... The Native American Drum Group Eastern Sky and Singers will be in full regalia and in celebration-mode to honor the Bald Eagle Family this Friday, November 25th as part of the third annual Native American Ceremony for the Bald Eagle and Native American Heritage Day at Norfolk Botanical Garden.

The event, which consists of Native American honor drum songs and ceremony in honor of Native American Heritage day, has been growing in popularity in the past years much to the appreciation of Eastern Sky Drum Group and Vincent Schilling, Executive Vice-President of Schilling Media, Inc.

Schilling, who is St. Regis Mohawk, commented on this year’s event, “Many people do not realize that there are over 45,000 people of Native American descent living in Virginia, and that we are alive and well.”

“This event is to show fellow members of our community that there is a rich and vibrant Native culture here in Hampton Roads - and what better way than to honor the eagle family on Friday, Native American Heritage Day, in November, Native American Heritage Month.”

The event will be taking place this year at the Norfolk Botanical Garden, at the newly constructed Eagle Tribute Plaza located next to NATO Tower. The Plaza was created in 2011 in memoriam of the bald eagle family and the female bald eagle that was killed earlier this year.

Perhaps there is a place at the NBG that could display this beautiful work.

Reese went to the Fraser Valley Bald Eagle Festival this month and here's a link to his blog with pics.

This of course, has nothing to do with Norfolk Botanical except for Reese is affiliated with Norfolk Botanical and so in my round-about way of thinking that makes this "On-Topic"

Plus you'll like the pics.

Mick, I understand your reasoning completely!!

What an amazing experience to see all those magnificent eagles in one place at one time. WOW! That would be a great field trip for next year....

~~NX news 12/2/11

She was equipped with a GPS transmitter before release.

NX, a juvenile Bald Eagle rescued from her nest at the Norfolk Botanical Garden earlier this year and treated and released by the Wildlife Center, was admitted to a permitted wildlife rehabilitator in the Northern Neck last night [December 1] . The injured eagle was found at 10:45 p.m. in the middle of the road near the Ophelia post office and was picked up by a deputy from the local sheriff’s office.

The preliminary report from the permitted rehabilitator is that NX has a wing droop and blood in her mouth, but is feisty and is in good weight and physical condition.

The eagle is now being transported to the Wildlife Center and is expected to arrive late this afternoon. We’ll post additional information here as we learn it.

Thank you Beth, just heard and I'm so glad that you posted.

I'm thinking the same thoughts as all of you are probably thinking. Many thanks to WCofV for rescue and treatment.

Jim, I know how you feel and my heart is with you.

Oh dear. I am glad she is in capable hands and hoping for a complete recovery. This bird has certainly had trouble....

Whether I agree/disagree with the transmitters doesn't really matter at this point. I think is just bad luck on her part. She was probably on the side of the road eating and got hit by a car (stupid drivers!). I do wonder though if she had a little too much human interaction and not enough eagle parent instruction to be able to get along well enough on her own. (I keep saying her ... ? ... can't remember!). Maybe if NX had been able to stay with it's siblings on release it would be doing better.

Then again ... none of that may have anything to do with anything!! :girlcrazy:

Quote:
Dr. Dave McRuer examined NX and found injuries to her right wing and eye. There were abrasions on her right carpus [wrist], which were sutured together using a skin stapler. Dr. Dave also found a one-square-centimeter laceration on her right wing and the vitreous of NX’s right eye also showed some damage. NX also had subcutaneous emphysema [air under the skin] on the left side of her chest. All of these injuries suggest that perhaps NX was hit by a car, though we may know more once radiographs are performed. Blood work revealed that lead levels are “low”, meaning that lead toxicity is not an issue.

Dr. Dave removed NX’s transmitter so that it does not become damaged or get in the way of any diagnostics. Everything about the transmitter and fitting looked great!

Patti,
You must have missed this part of the report (It was down under the pictures):

"NX weighed in at 4.035 kg. When she was released in August 2011, she was 4.18 kg — which means she was doing just fine finding her food out in the wild. Both weights were with her transmitter on."

So, it seems that she was doing fine. From my reading, it's normal for juvies to lose some weight after going off on their own.

They are planning on doing radiographs tomorrow (12/3)... I pray that she's ok. (Yes, NX is a female. NV was the male from last year. And NZ is also a female.)

Brief update from this morning..

Dr. Dave reported that NX was standing this morning when he checked on her. She was fasted last night, so that the veterinary team can anesthetize her later today to perform a series of radiographs.
