Thanks kittenface. Bob Anderson updated the cam page. Here's part of his update.

Update: 01/18/12
"...She then changed directions and flew towards the new wind generator passing a few hundred feet off to the side. There was no wind and the blades were stationary. I can’t help but wonder what the fallout would be if this famous eagle was killed by the turbine blades. Can’t/won’t go there.. I finally tracked her down perched in a tree about a block south east of the wind generator. All is fine.. I must admit is was heartwarming to see D1 soar over the city of Decorah."

All afternoon yesterday the pair vocalized; on the nest and in the distance. I didn't get a chance to upload this yesterday but this is the male vocalizing.

Great catch Mick. I wonder if it was D1!? Probably wondering why Mom and Dad won't let her come home!! :snowflake2:

On 1-18-12 mr. Anderson reported that E2/D1 was 4.4 mi from the nest.

Update about the sub-adult fly by from Bob Anderson,
Update: 01/20/12
Here is what we know.
1. We don't know whether the juvenile was D1 or not. It doesn't seem impossible, but we don't have a clear enough image to know for sure - the juvenile was moving very fast and the image is not good enough to pick out detail.
2. Bob had been at the hatchery not long before the juvenile was seen at 4:22 and didn't see any eagles, or get a chirp on the receiver.
3. By 6:48 PM CST she was near Fort Atkinson, IA, on the Little Turkey River. Fort Atkinson is about 13 miles from Decorah as calculated in a straight line (ie not by road). We don't know when she left Decorah. We wish we did.

So, long to short, it could have been D1 at the hatchery, but that is something we will never know. The lack of a chirp is not necessarily conclusive in an area as hilly as Decorah - if it were D1, she could have been over in the next valley and the receiver could not have detected her through the hill.

They are so funny to watch maneuvering sticks, but this one with all the branches attached to it was a real challenge!

Thanks sgb and Susan

The eagles mate off-camera but their shadows can be seen.

Thank you for the lovely screencap Suzanne.

We are seeing this same unusual behavior from the Richmond female. (Maybe it's not so unusual)

The female opens her wings and puts her foot on the male's back while softly vocalizing.

For the second time this afternoon the female initiates pair bonding activity- this time towards the camera. She stridently vocalizes 4 minutes later (The 4 minutes are edited out)

Thanks for your quick work getting these online, Mick. Here are the two events in one video. This behavior may seem unusual to us, but I think it's because few people have had a chance to observe eagles' courtship on cam as much as we now are able to. Here is something from FinnBMD, mod on the Decorah chat room who has done a great deal of study of raptor courtship and mating behavior: "Gary Bortolotti and Jon Gerrard cite the work of a avian biologist at a Research Center in Maryland who studied a pair of captive eagles. Her research showed that the female was first to approach the male and initiate copulation 8 out of 16 times and would call and even nudge the male to get him going."
