I understand some may not want to watch the video ... but with a 15 minute refresh it's not really that bad. . so to speak. But, on the other had ... it's a mystery we're trying to solve.

I'll give a brief synopsis ....

6:30 A.M., cam still in black and white... Mom sleeping peacefully on the chicks. She wakes up suddenly, looks around a few times, gets up and leaves ... chicks alone, but moving all around - they looked perfectly fine.

Suddenly an adult returns, stands over the bowl and seems to 'peck' at the chicks underneath. Eventually it seems it moves both of them out of the bowl. The adult is on the left of the nest, then suddenly on the right side ... this is where I think there was a switch. Possibly an intruding eagle killed the chicks, then the resident adult returns.

A little while later, one chick is back in the bowl and moving around. Parent returns and broods ... they then turned the cam off. So ... from that point on we're lost. Lisa is trying to keep us update. There is a ranger keeping an eye on the cam and has said nothing much has happened .... adult has just been sitting there.

Lisa also posted Laura's video. I don't know if we'll ever figure this one out. :(

Bottom line ... one of the chicks may still be alive but we'll have to rely on Lisa to find out.

Patti, Lisa has a live cam. I'm sure they will know more clearly once that is reviewed. I watched the video, and its really hard to tell with the 15 min refresh. Did you see the male recently? I wonder why he wasn't around for the shift change.

I sent the video to Reese. He agrees it looks like an intruder.

thanks for the synopsis, PattiO. I did go and read the coverage on WOW.. the video was hard to watch. It will definitely be a miracle if one has survived..

maybe the times we have seen the chicks left alone, Mom has been off chasing an intruder away.. except this time without success. .

Just shows how naive I still am about all this stuff. . I guess it makes sense for an intruder to kill the offspring. . thus the gene pool. . I just never thought it would happen. Last year at Shepherdstown, I never saw the intruder male go after the chick. Of course, Belle was very protective and rarely left the nest until she eventually had to. . but I don't think the intruder male (now the resident male) ever came back and did harm to the chick. . sorry. . I'm just rambling here.

Ramble away SGB ... it's the only way I ever figure anything out! :girlcrazy:

The thing that bothers me ... that I can't figure out ... is which adult we'd been seeing on the nest most of the time. We know the chicks had kept getting left alone for long periods of time. That in itself is unusual. At least I think so ... they were only days old. I can't ever recall chicks that young being left alone for such long periods of time.

THAT is what made me think that something had happened to one of the adults. BUT, there have been a few s'caps of 2 adults on the nest. Very confusing.

Last update for today. :(

February 26, 2012 (final post for the day)

Our ranger -- who can see the live cam feed -- relayed the following news:

"As of 3:30 pm, the remaining chick was still alive. Parent was not on the nest at the time but soon returned. At 4:10 pm, I glanced at the TV and finally saw both parents on the nest. Male appeared to be sitting, and female chowing down on something. Did not see chick get fed, though. This is good, however, because I reviewed a couple hours of the tape from this morning and never saw a visit from the other parent."

The other chick does appear to be dead and is slowly getting buried in the nest material. Sometimes eagle parents remove the body and sometimes they let it get buried in the deep nest.

If the remaining chick is still alive later on Monday, we'll turn the cam feed back on.

Lonette on HWF has been recording the nest this year. The last time she saw dad was yesterday at 11:57 a.m. Lisa reported this afternoon that both eagles were on the nest. One was eating and the other was brooding.

Rest in Peace little one 2-18-12 to 2-26-12 Soar high in the heavens.

We have been wondering if there hasn't been an intruder around because the food was not as plentiful as in the past.

Been watching this nest for a lot of years and jsut my take is an intruder might have keeping one of the parents form getting back to nest. If you remember at Shepherdstown last year, the intruder was keeping Lib from returning and then Lib was spotted no more. this could be why food has not been plentiful also. The resident male and female may been too busy trying to keep intruder at Bay.
We also know that the chicks need to be covered early on .

We might never know but this is my take and I am deeply saddened as I know LIsa is. She devotes so much time here. I know a lot are critical of the cams going off but Lisa has the best interests of everyone at heart.

Positive vibes going their way

I think you've got it right exactly bev. We've gone through Laura's video numerous times. I think we've narrowed it down to the 6:30 A.M. time frame. Something got Mom up and off the nest in a hurry. Then somehow the intruder landed ... killing at least the one chick.

We now are thinking that the eagle seen moving the chicks out of the bowl was actually Mom. When she realized the one chick was still alive she moved it back into the bowl.

I've been at this too much today. :(

This is really sad news. I hope Craig has time to review the video and report his thoughts. I guess they believe there can not be a second clutch. I wonder if this is a new male....

They have removed the eaglets for examination and cam is up.

I admire Lisa for her sensitivity to all and her commitment here. Will have to watch and see what we can see as far the eagles go.

I saw a post from Lisa today and she believes this is the same old pair since they nested so early.
