Golden Eagles

Another post on WOW from Janet & Forrest ....

Quote:
Hey everyone...the Golden Eagles Petra and Rocky are back and they have two eggs. Today is the 24th of Feb. Same exact days as last year. We expect the hatch to be the first week in April...working hard to get the camera up and rolling. We have a company called Yellowknife which is a broadband company that is donating the connection and they tell us that they will have more than enough bandwidth to go around. This is good as last year we blitzed the system in the days leading up to the fledge. Be patient as we are working to build a viewing platform and may even be able to add sound although eagles don't make alot of noise. Camera should be up well before they hatch. For those of you in the area of Sisters, we have a guest house on the property very near the camera set up and we will be renting it out during the time between hatch and fledge. All proceeds from the rental will go to Wolftree, Inc. This is the organization that owns the property that these eagles nest on. They do outdoor science education for kids in Central Oregon and the property is used as one of the classrooms. They really need the $$$ support so if anyone wants to rent the place let me know. While it's pretty cool to see these cams...looking at it through the telescope is pretty amazing. Stay tuned!!!

Hope and Valor this am in the far tree.
Image

Temperature currently is 37 and rain is now pelleting the cam lens... under a winter weather advisory til 9PM CST. Hoping there is no sleet.
Image
Scenario 12-12:30 pm: I can't see too well but it looks like Valor is switching between pulling in grasses toward Hope on nest or perching beside Hope and large tree branch. He has been in nest with her since rain started. :girlluv: Then they both left and just a minute ago, one is perched in far tree. :girlsad3: Too much worrying going on here, so going out to mow grass... :gaah:

so cute...Derek was trying to feed Savannah. . she really wasn't hungry

Image

He then tried to feed the baby, who wasn't hungry either. . and as best I could tell, had a huge crop. .. the egg is intact. . I'm thinking its not gonna hatch. .

Derek taking his turn

So do I, skygirlblue. The eggs have been alone off and on the last 3 days. worry, worry, but I keep remembering the FB page posters saying they are very good parents and fledged three in 2010. This morning there was quite a bit of vocalizing by Hope on nest-Valor came and perched, vocalizing too and they both left. Couldn't see any 'intruder' birds close by when I looked at the nest tree cam.
Image

They've both been at the nest together for longer periods today than I've seen before.
Image

First egg was laid Feb. 1st, so hatch could be Wed., March 7th. Is that correct? Rain and 60 degrees predicted that day... oh my!! Full moon this week and the nest and Hope can be seen at night the last few days, so am hoping I can watch the hatch if it's at night. :thumbup

Sounds like typical intruder behavior to me. This is getting very tiresome/worrisome ... everywhere it seems! I hope everything is OK!

kittenface and everyone, I am so waaay beyond anxious, :nailbite: waiting for the first tiny fuzzball with bright black eyes!! :egghatch:
Working last two days and only able to get glimpses of nest activity. Monday night Valor with with Hope in the nest until almost 7pm CST. Wondered about intruders again.. They shared 'beak kisses'.
Image
Together late again last night, but didn't get photos.

This morning, the eggs were alone almost 1.5 hrs and SUMRR got close up of eggs... looking for pip maybe?
Image

Hope has been on eggs 2.5 hrs. and just left again now. SUMRR was right there getting another close up. Does it look like a pip on egg to right on the part touching the other egg???
Image

I am sure I will have hair whitier than the eggs by the end of this week. :help:

I meant front top, maybe just grass blades over egg... just a bit ago, both came and left and SUMRR did third close up.
Image

Then one was in far tree and looked like the other flew between nest and far tree with two smaller birds flying near the one flying. My imagination is running wild here, isn't it?! Then for 20 minutes, this was the nest scene. Wings are normal position as I type now.

Protecting??... or warm??... temp in 60's right now.

My picture on the screen is real grainy/blurry I can't see to much of anything, I'll be honest I don't like that they aren't on the eggs so much it worries me this close to hatching but you'll find I WORRY ALOT

Dayton Ohio Eagle update
Jim & Cindy

Update March 5, 2012 - Only 16 more days to wait, give or take a few days. The high winds and storms of the last week have again blown Jim and Cindy to and fro but they have somehow survived. Every hour spent at the lake is the pretty much the same, a lot of looking at the nest and a quick glimpse of a distant eagle. The eagle-cam provides a much better view of the nest.

Last Tuesday, as I sat nest watching, I saw a juvenile eagle fly from over The Mad River, west of Harshman Road and head across the road towards Huffman Dam. My first thought was that it might be Pride, Jim and Cindy’s surviving eaglet. As I was watching it fly over the large lake east of Harshman, an adult eagle dropped from somewhere high in the blue skies, directly above the juvenile. When about 70 feet apart the juvenile sheared off to the north and the adult headed south towards the nest. I have seen Jim and Cindy aggressively defend the nest when another bird-of-prey, a possible threat to the eggs, wanders too close to the nest. This encounter seemed less intense. If it was Pride, perhaps the adult eagle (either Jim or Cindy) did not perceive it as a great threat. If it was indeed Pride, the young eagle will soon get the message that it is time for it to move on.

Activity will pick up in the area of the nest after the eggs hatch and Jim and Cindy begin feeding the eaglets. Part of this activity will include the eagles very aggressively defending their territory from all intruders. JBW/EEW

kittenface, Hope and Valor were on and off the nest today. Seemed every time Hope was incubating, Valor would come, get her off the nest and then follow her when she left. I did not see any close up shots of the eggs today (tried to get 'chores' done, not easy to do when I kept checking what was happening at different nests). Seems like Hope spent a lot of time rearranging grasses around bowl, more than she's ever done. Late afternoon and evening, Valor would come and it looked like he was nudging Hope from the bowl... don't understand that at all, unless he is trying to tell her the eggs won't hatch. :cryinggirl: Tonight she even 'nipped' at him a couple times when he got too close to her nesting.
Image
Injecting human emotions, I know. Just so sad, don't want to think the eggs won't hatch. Just wait and see, I guess. No mention has been made of them on the FB page today, hopefully a good sign.

You can browse the photos I took today at http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v193/mvo47/Lock%20and%20Dam%2013/8mar12/

Such a strange last couple of days at several nests. May God keep His loving arms around all His creatures and give us the grace to accept what we cannot change.
