First bald eagle chick of season comes early on Channel Islands :hapdance:

A bald eagle chick hatched this week in a nest near Carl Peak on Santa Cruz Island — the earliest known natural hatching of a bald eagle on the Channel Islands, officials said.

"I didn't expect it until next week," said Peter Sharpe, a wildlife biologist with the Institute for Wildlife Studies.

Sharpe said he doesn't know why the chick came early, but such mating activity is something he thought he would never see on the Channel Islands.

The chick hatched Monday. And to make things even more exciting for bald eagle enthusiasts, a mating pair considered celebrities among wildlife biologists finally settled on a nest and the female laid her first egg on Tuesday. They are known as the "Pelican Harbor pair" because in 2006 they produced the first bald eagle chick on the islands since 1949 in a nest established decades ago on Pelican Harbor.

Yvonne Menard, public information officer for Channel Islands National Park, said the female, called "Princess Cruz," is supposed to lay another egg any moment now. Menard said a webcam the National Park Service has trained on the nest has helped generate 1.5 million hits from 160,00 unique visitors in 145 countries.

Bald eagles disappeared from the islands in the 1960s due to pesticides in the ocean. Then the Montrose Settlements Restoration Program funded an effort to reintroduce bald eagles into the Channel Islands from 2002-06.

"We took bald eagle chicks from the San Francisco Zoo or they were live-captured in Alaska," Menard said.

Today, about 70 bald eagles live on the Channel Islands, including 15 nesting pairs.

MsEaglewoman posted this on the forum/blog so we'll see a video soon
:hapdance: If she says theres a hatch then there is a hatch :hapdance:

I think a chick may have hatched out folks!!! I braved the rain today and got down there around 5:15. Liberty was on the Christmas Tree, weathering the storm as if it was nothing!
At 5:25 she flew across and went around on the backside of the nest area. She flew into the nest and looked as if she was eating something that was in the nest already. Patriot got up slowly and carefully, trying not to step on anyone is what it looked like. He picked up some food from the nest and started eating, too. It looked like Liberty then started feeding a chick. She ripped off food and then her head moved toward something in the nest.
I took a long video which I am currently uploading, so I'll post it for you to see for yourselves soon!
Today is Day #40, but it is possible the chick hatched out yesterday. We just really won't know for sure without the eaglecam!
But, I know for sure that there was a feeding going on today, so that is exciting news!!!
Now if that rain would let up a bit we could get down and see some more action!!!

Patriot and Liberty are up in the nest as it sways wildly back and forth in the wind! Patriot(right) can be seen eating or feeding the chick(s). Liberty on the right watches and hangs on for the ride!
