Food update. . Pantry is good this morning. . Dad brought in a catfish head and a complete gizzard shad. . so, I'm feeling better about food today. . I'm hoping this will decrease R1's aggression. . there have been 4 feeds this morning.. .I missed all but one of them. . R2 got a few bites, but, though eager for food, he was not accepting what dad was giving him unless dad made them extra small.. then he would take a few. . I'm hoping R2 will gain more strength today. .and if the feeds are long enough, he should get his fill. .

I won't be able to check back in on them until later this evening. . off for some family fun!!!

Good news everyone. Less aggression today and more food/fish. During the 1:05pm feed there were only 3 pecks. The red mark on R2's head looks to be healing. Some thought that was a blood spot from food but I reviewed my videos from the past three days last night and I think it is due to pecking/pulling the down feathers.
R2 ate very well during this feed. (Edited due to raindrops on cam shield)

Having Obx share information about R1's aggression was very informative and honest. It is posted on fb for all. I am pulling for R2 as we all are, but think R2 shows that he/she is able to wait for food and at the last feeding today was eagerly snatching food from the parent. Some pieces were rather big. So thanks Obx that was very worthwhile.

I'm just glad Dr. Watts was willing to talk me through it today. Its hard to know what to say sometimes with so many watching. Thanks to you for being helpful in both the chat and SS. Its really great having you around!

A very brief summary of the day. .

There were several really good feeds this morning. The main one I watched was one of the best ones I have seen. .there was NO aggression From R1. Dad did the feeding and was superb. He alternated between the two and both had very full crops.

Fast forward to the afternoon. (I was not there. . so, this is the reader's digest version)

Food continues to be an issue. What food was on the nest was eaten during the morning feeds. due to the recent rains, The James is at flood stage and muddy. Apparently, both parents were gone for quite a while this afternoon. R1 took his hunger aggression out on R2 resulting in some injury. Dad returned with a fish and started another feed. . it was another excellent feed, with no aggression. When it was finished, R2 had the largest crop I have ever seen on him. I was able to finally zoom in on his injury. . Since I did not see it as it was happening (thank goodness) I'm not sure how these pics compare to the actual event.

I also heard he could have an abrasion on one of his wing, but I didn't see it with the cam. His appetite was excellent and energy level was very good.

Around 8:30, mom decided to do another feed (first time I've seen this after dark). .R1 was not interested (very unusual) so mom was able to spend a few moments, feeding only R2, which was awesome to watch. Unfortunately, that was the only fish left on the nest, so unless somebody has good luck early in the morning, there will be little or no breakfast!!!

and. . that was the day on the Richmond Eagle nest!!!

Hang in there guys. I have watched what we thought was brutal but, if food supply is good , one will feed till full and then the other will get fed. they do learn this eventually. We saw it a lot on Sidney nest , with 3 young ones.
If food keeps coming , the wounds will heal quickly.

R2 will learn to jsut keep out of way till R1 has its full.

Thanks for the updates SgB...I wouldn't be able to watch R1 being sooooo mean to R2.
Lets hope the food supply increases...

I am off for the day but I have to say that this is very hard to watch. Nature and food supply are not helping this nest at all right now. I am stormin heaven for a successful catch of 4 fish.

obx you asked how we are doing and right now I am hopeful but very upset with what we are watching. And I thought losing WVa chicks was hard last year, but for some reason this is harder.
I can stay handle this emotionally, but only with emotion.

bb tonight to check on the nest. I am off to watch grandchildren.

HWF viewers are keeping record too.

I have kind of been avoiding watching ... subconsciously I think. R2 may have some 'wounds' showing on him but from your pictures SGB it doesn't really look to serious to me.

This, I think, is the price we pay for having such a good, close-up camera. :egg16: Maybe it's not such a good thing.

there was more fish today and R1 and R2 got well fed while I was watching.

they say the river would be back to normal by tomorrow, so that is good.

When the cam is pulled way up , you are seeing clsoe up what others jsut see a bit further away. the injuries, are not as bad as they look, I think.

In a few weeks, if food supply is good , this will all work out.
