KF - I think you captured the start of hatching on Wednesday at the Pawnee nest. The chicks finally started breaking out of their shells today: I've seen 3 so far!

I just checked today's photo archives at the Pawnee kestrel nest, and sure enough there had been another hatch for a total of 4 today! How's that for great timing?

Caught a picture this morning of Dad in the nest - he'd just arrived to take over chick-sitting duties from Mom.

I can't tell at this point if we still have 5 chicks or if the last chick hatched to make it 6.

What a chick pile you captured at Nebraska, SGB! Yesterday I was finally able to see all the chicks and count them: Six little cuties in this nest.

Idaho Kestrels

I can't make out any pips in the eggs yet, but there should be a first hatch here later today or tomorrow.

Its reported that Boise has at least 2/3 hatches so far as of 11 or so pm

Boise now has four (possibly even five) hatches as of yesterday. I managed to capture these two shots of the chicks yesterday . . .

We are pleased to announce that five chicks have successfully hatched! You may then be wondering: why is the female still sitting in the nestbox? Kestrels hatch with only a thin layer of down and not enough body mass to regulate their own temperature, meaning that the parents must keep them warm by “brooding” until they grow larger and develop a new layer of insulation there are pictures at the nest from the 23rd of 2 or 3 chicks.

Thanks, KF, for the nice video of the Nebraska and Pawnee chicks. They're really growing up fast!

And I know what you mean about the Idaho chicks - it's so hard to catch sight of them when the parents keep them covered up!
