Slideshow of some pics from last night. There's been concern that the oldest is sick. Hancock forum folks are keeping a good watch but OWL is not allowed to do any kind of rescue unless a chick falls.

Great SS Patti why are they concerned that it is sick is it doing something unusual? I don't watch the nest so I don't know

It won't lay down. Some of the chatters saw it eat a large piece of food Sunday night ... ever since then it would'nt lay down and it wasn't eating much. Mom was trying to feed it on Monday or Tuesday and it wouldn't take a single bite. It still seems alert, and it's pooping ... so, hopefully it's digesting whatever it ate. I didn't have time to check in on them tonight.

Reports this morning are that Goldwing has died during the night/morning. :cryinggirl:

As posted by Judy (JKR) on the Hancock Forum this morning ...
Quote:
Today is one of the saddest days at an eagle nest that any of our Hancock Wildlife family has witnessed on our own nests. Cry Hanky

It seems unfathomable that we could lose Goldwing when she appeared so much better yesterday. Obviously our poor baby was suffering more than we could have imagined. Today she is flying free with the angels --- and I'm sure, being Richard's namesake, that he was there to greet her.

Poor Mom and Linux are standing on the nest looking quite bewildered.

A bit earlier this morning Mom arrived with food. Linux watched her for the longest time but didn't appear to want to leave his place next to Goldwing's body. Eventually hunger won over and he had a bite to eat.

Mom has moved Goldwing's body --- Was she trying to wake her up ? Did she know she was dead ? I do know that these parents loved their chicks and in my heart, and six years of observing, I know that they do have emotions.

It will be very hard for all of us to watch this camera but Linux needs our support and love as well.

Fly free with angels Goldwing. You were loved by all of your Aunties here at Delta2. Red Heart

Love jkr

The nest is hard to watch. Take caution opening the cam. The eaglet is on it's back with it's legs and feet in the air. There is plastic all over the nest.

The mother stands by her eaglet.

OMG I am so sorry to hear this :egg10:
I know this is crazy well maybe not, but I wonder if she some how ate some of that plastic and it got blocked in her internal organs just a thought.
Fly Free Fly High sweet Goldwing
I'm sorry I didn't know you as the others did

this is just so tragic and sad. . I can't go to the cam at all. . even though I haven't checked on them in a while. .

A chatter on the Richmond chat this morning sent me a pm and said that Goldwing had indeed eaten some of the plastic. so, just take that information at face value. I do no know the chatter that reported this to me, so I do not know if this is fact and this chatter witnessed this or if it is just assumption. .

At this point, let's just pray that the other little one is more cautious in what he eats. .

fly free, little Goldwing .. :tissue:

SGB ... lots of speculation was going around on the chats. There's the chat page on the Ustream link .. those folks were all fighting and being terrible and calling OWL repeatedly and makes pains of themselves.

A chatter I know from the White Rock cam (and trust) said 2 viewers saw GW eating Sunday night and seem to get something stuck in it's crop ... a bone or large piece of food. Bev Day said that if that were the case it would eventually be digested. David Hancock has posted and said it's most probably that it ate something that was poisoned. I suppose that could be the case but then why didn't both eaglets get sick? I was leaning more toward the stuck food because afterwards GW would not lay down. It seemed everytime she tried she had trouble breathing.

I wonder if it would not be possible for something large being swallowed to get stuck and puncture a lung? May have to ask that question somewhere. GW seemed to rally yesterday and was moving around and eating ... then this morning she literally just fell over and died. :( I guess we'll never know because unless the adults push her body out of the nest they can't retrieve it.

She was 7 weeks old.

you are right. . we will never know, unless she is pushed from the nest.

and I think you are right about poison. .it would have affected the other one and the parent. .so, I have to lean toward eating something that created some sort of blockage, either in the crop, stomach, or intestines. . and plastic could do that, I guess. . .I know how freaked out my vet was when my dog ate nylon years ago. Huge fear of intestinal blockage if not expelled. .

I am just sick about this,. Several of my friends monitor this site. I used to until I got too wound up with my falcons.

now we do know that from previous years, they do do rescues, so this does bother me that they did not go up when it was reported.

So much tragedy,

I heard about this sad event on June 1.

Decided to make a video to celebrate Linux. After all, he is still with us. :loveheart:
