That looks like the old bird's nest, now destroyed, that mom was playing with last week...I still have my fingers crossed...

so do I SGB

I know some will continue to incubate but not to this intensity. I am still thinking that one o f those eggs is viable and the powers to be have made a mistake.

Usually at least one of the pair is not as diligent but both of these guys are

MN Eagles

Pic from Eagleholic posted a few minutes ago...

I guess we are now getting our answer... :tissue:

As sad as this is, I hope the other two collapse soon...so that they can get on with their lives...even though I will miss seeing them...I guess there is always a very slim chance they will reclutch...just don't think so..

Thanks so much for that video, Bev...

Well, I started Searching. Not much info about eagles reclutching at the end of an incubation period. However (and I remember this well~now..hee hee)...NBG did reclutch in 2008. Its a totally different scenario than what we have here, as mom and dad DID NOT incubate to full term...but, here's what happened:
    2/2/08: egg #1
    2/4/08: Egg #2
    2/8/08: egg #3

2/14: Intruder female arrives and chases off Mom. Very little incubation by dad of the 3 eggs...Dad was also seen mating with intruder female..2 eggs were removed from the nest (didn't write down the date)..don't know what happened to the 3rd egg.

    2/23/08: NBG mom returns...
    3/16/08: Mom lays 1st egg
    3/19/08: Mom lays second egg

Eggs 1 and 2 somehow damaged (theory was several poor landings by adults) and parents were seen eating eggs.

3/22: 3rd egg laid and hatched successfully....and guess who this hatch was!!!! Our sweet little Buddy, the eaglet with Avian Pox..now living as an educational bird at Wildlife Center of VA!!!

Anyway, like I said...the NBG eggs were not incubated past hatch time...but, they were able to reclutch!!! Now, I know that MN DNR is not gonna interfere, so let's hope those eggs collapse soon if they aren't viable before mom's hormone levels hit rock bottom.

I know I am being a sap hoping for at least one. they are just so attentive and usually one of them sort of gives up

I support Buddy through the adopt a critter program. Get all sorts of neat pictures and information

Quick update on Libby Dam Eagle Cam Status

February 25, 2013 — Eagle, bald eagle, nature, eaglecam, birds, raptors, Libby Dam

I received a very nice reply to my email question regarding whether there is still a plan for the Libby Dam eaglecam this year. Park Ranger Susan J James confirmed that they are working hard to get the cam up and running and wrote that “We are in the process of getting Libby’s webcam back up, parts are on order, takes a lot of time unfortunately.“ I know how much goes into getting an eaglecam functioning and appreciate all their hard work! I will be looking forward to seeing the cam when it is up and running, as I know many of you will!

My biggest question as to the DNR nest is WHY this particular pair laid eggs so early. The beginning of January is obviously not when Minnesota eagles should be laying eggs.

Are they first-timers?
Was there a warm spell early in January?
Perhaps the pair migrated from a lower state? (Although that seems unlikely since eagles tend to nest in their natal territory).

Oh well ........

Got this update from MDNR
You are subscribed to Eagle Cam for Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. This information has recently been updated, and is now available.

Two eggs remain. If you were watching yesterday, you probably noticed a crack in one of the eagle eggs, then later, some shell remnants. We suspect that when the egg cracked, the contents just seeped out. It is likely that the contents of the egg did not hold a developed embryo. After the liquid contents of the egg seeped out, the egg shell essentially disintegrated.

In the wild, there are many, many more eggs layed than will ever reach the hatching stage, let alone maturity. Predators, bad weather conditions and inexperienced parents all play a role in the developing eggs and the raising of young. Because of these known and expected threats, birds lay many more eggs than will ever become adult birds. We know that the population of most birds can sustain some nest failures, and bald eagles are no exception. We have the highest population of eagles in the lower 48 states, so incubating and raising young eagles in Minnesota is not impossible!

We are still learning a lot of valuable information from this pair of eagles. We did get the band of one of the birds read yesterday - thank you to all who sent that information in! As soon as we have data back from that band, we will share the history with all of you. We also have learned what a tremendous effort these birds put into incubating eggs and how difficult and calculated the whole process can be. And finally, we are learning about their feeding and sleeping habits, how the parents share responsibilities and resources and just how tough our eagles are!

Thank you all so much for your support and positive comments about the nest camera. These positive comments and all of the stories about how people are learning from and enjoying this camera make this a very valuable tool. This is a testimony about how your contributions to the Nongame Wildlife checkoff are so very valuable and appreciated. Thank you!

Latest post from MN DNR

Friday, March 1

Hello eagle friends. It is very difficult to announce, but we need to inform you. The two remaining eagle eggs in this nest will very likely not hatch. It has been at 50 days since we saw three eggs in the nest. This is two weeks past expected hatching time and we have lost optimism.

Eventually, the parent eagles will also figure out that the eggs are not viable. They have both invested a lot of time and energy into caring for these two eggs, even more than we all have. Because of this investment, and because they can’t count, the birds will sit on the eggs for a long time, waiting for them to hatch.

How long will they tend to them? We don’t know. Again, we are learning along with you and it will be interesting to see how long they will continue to incubate. It will also be interesting to see if these two birds will do the same thing next year, or if they will start over this year. We will just have to observe, but we are very confident that this nest will continue to be used by eagles, especially if we do not disturb the natural process.

Some good news is that we will soon be turning on the peregrine falcon cam! The peregrines are already back, hanging around in the St. Paul box and getting ready to start their courtship behavior. They will use the box for this purpose until sometime in March, when they will lay eggs. We will announce the activation of this camera very soon. Stay tuned!

...and of course, I am now scratching my head, trying to figure out which PeFa nest they are referring to in St. Paul.

I know..its really hard to watch...I know MN DNR states they won't interfere, but I'm thinking about emailing them just to see if they will remove the eggs...who knows, they might reclutch then...and they are entering the "normal" time they should be laying eggs...
