A brief youtube video of a shift change (posted By Lisa on CMNH) of a pair of Bald Eagles that nest in the greater Cleveland Ohio area, in one of the metroparks...

she hasn't moved yet, but what I can gather from some of the comments I read at various places yesterday, another egg broke...so, if true, one to go...I hope it breaks soon so that they can get on with their lives...and who knows..maybe a miracle and they will re clutch..

MDNR UPDATE

You are subscribed to Eagle Cam for Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. This information has recently been updated, and is now available.

Wednesday, March 6

One egg left. On Monday, we watched as the second egg cracked and crumbled. It appears as if it crumbled and disintegrated in much the same way the first egg did. Hopefully, the third egg will do the same, soon. Since we now know that there are not chicks, we hope the circumstances will allow this pair of birds to get on with being eagles.

As you have seen, the incubation process has been tedious and monotonous. We are pretty sure the adults have been frequently napping on the nest in the warm sunshine and that they are getting weary. They are strong birds and they are built for this process, but it would sure be nice if they could take shelter from the snow once in a while! They have proven that they can handle just about any weather and are certainly not starving or struggling physically at all.

So, will they re-nest this year, or will they wait until next year? If they do wait until next year, we hope they have learned their lesson and that they wait until March to lay their eggs!

Some fun facts about the camera visitors:

We have had more than 72,000 unique visitors to the site

We have an average of 15,000 visits per day during the week and around 11,500 on the weekends.

Visits from 96 countries around the world!

The eaglet at the Caroline Raptor Center was killed overnight.

From the Facebook page ...
Savannah Eagle
I am sad to report that the eaglet was killed by a predator overnight. More information to come.

I don't understand how this could happen here. :tissue:

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. -- Early Thursday morning, staff members of Carolina Raptor Center entered the eagle aviary and found the remains of the eaglet hatched on February 9.
It appears that the almost four-week-old chick was attacked overnight by an unknown predator.

Enhanced predator protection is in place at the eagle aviary, and there were no obvious breaches in the enclosure, providing little evidence as to the identity of the predator. There are numerous carnivorous predators that are naturally found in Latta Plantation Nature Preserve.

“We are particularly saddened by the death of the eaglet in this way, because we put forth tremendous effort to protect our birds,” said Executive Director Jim Warren. “The predator protection includes chain link fencing that is dug into the ground to prevent predators from digging under barricades.”

Savannah and Derek have produced chicks since 2006, and this is the first predator attack in the eagle aviary since the aviary was opened. There is no evidence that any of the resident bald eagles were involved or injured in the incident.

It is common practice at Carolina Raptor Center to investigate all predator attacks and aviary breaches. The center has informed the appropriate officials at US Fish and Wildlife. Center leadership will provide additional information to the Carolina Raptor Center community of staff, volunteers and friends as it becomes available.

Carolina Raptor Center extends sympathies to the thousands of EagleCam watchers and supporters who mourn the death of the eaglet.
The EagleCam is the one of the most popular features on WCNC.com, with thousands of people tuning in every day to watch Savannah, Derek and their family.
We at NBC Charlotte are deeply saddened to learn of the eaglet's death, and we would like to join the Carolina Raptor Center in extending our sympathies to each of you who love and adore Derek and Savannah the way we do.

Fly free, little one. :sorrow:

This news breaks my heart. :sum7: I was just watching a few days ago as Derek passed food to Savannah who passed it on to the baby. I hope they can find the weak spot in the enclosure for future safety.

I hope it isn't a mink...they can fit through small openings...usually carry what they kill to the opening they came in from...and it could go to other enclosures...

I've lost many birds to mink....Thank goodness they move on and don't stay in one place to long!!!

Sorry about the little one...just very sad...
