SGB, the Genoa nest does fall under Greg's watch. From what I understand, Greg is responsible for monitoring all of Wisconsin. I looked in the 2012 nesting report, but he does not mention specific birds, just that last year they produced 3 chicks. I do not have his contact info - at least not that I know of. If you send it, I will ask him.

This is one of Amy's nests from RRP I don't know if they would or should I say could do anything, but here is the info . Also you could get thru the forum its self (it takes a bit) she is probably running around like a chicken with its head cut off right now.

thanks for that info, KF...so, it would be best to email Bob?

I don't think they would do anything right now...After watching what Buddy went through, its not like clipping toenails..I think they have to be sedated for a beak trim..

I also think her top beak has grown more since the eggs were laid. Somehow she is managing to feed...I don't know how she is doing it. I've never seen Dad do a feed...wonder if he knows how?

so...now to come up with a game plan here to see if somebody can help her...gosh..can you imagine trying to trap an adult?

I sent Amy an email expressing concerns about the growing beak and her ability to continue to tear food and feed the chick in addition to problems for herself. Copied both you and Kittenface. I will advise if and when I hear anything.

As far as trapping her, it can be done, but it isn't easy for sure. A few years ago John Castrale caught and banded one of the adults at the IPL Harding St. plant [I think]. I wonder if genetically if this a problem to pass a mutant gene that predisposes her chicks to the same fate?

At rehab we see growing beaks in non releasable birds and filing them down is not an easy task. I sure don't know what the answer is here....

Saw a feed, well as much as you can tell with a refresh cam. I don't see how that chick is still alive.
She was in the box, then he was, but I don't think that he fed any.

thanks gigi...I'll wait to see if you here back from Amy before sending my email to Bob...

Didn't they trap and band Guinevere at South Bend? I did see a video once of a biologist netting an adult while they were at the box to band the chicks...I guess if you have a really large net, an aggressive adult that dive bombs you, great timing, and nerves of steal, then netting an adult that's dive bombing you during banding would be the way to go. You take the chick and the mom..band the chick, do a beak trim, feed the chick a nice dinner, then put them both back at the same time...the plan in an ideal world...LOL

I can't even remember if they band here...

I received a reply from Amy this morning.
"Gigi, we are going to try to trap her and trim her beak. We may not be able to get her, but we will try. Bob has a lot of experience with this, and a tool for it.

Thanks so much for your email."

I remember John Castrale trapping an adult at IPL Harding to band her, but I cannot remember any more than that - as usual

I'm afraid the chick didn't make it. Haven't seen female either. A few minutes ago the male came, picked up some leftovers (I hope), dropped it again and left.
Wish they would zoom out, maybe the female moved all the way to one side, with the baby. (Keeping hopes up here)

Oh No...that is so sad and I am so sorry to hear that..maybe not enough food? Or an injury? Or maybe nothing related at all to mom?

I do hope they will still try to catch mom and help her...of course it will be harder now..
