I can't believe the kestrel nesting season is almost over! It looks as if all the chicks in this year's successful nests have fledged except for the nests at Dettingen and Muttenz.

Dettingen - There are still two chicks here, but they look ready to fledge at any time.

Muttenz - There always seems to be plenty of food stashed in the nest for the four chicks. Any day now, this will be the only nest left with kestrel chicks.

New Kestrel Nest

I just found a new kestrel nest in Somerset, England, that has chicks. The chicks were busy moving around and eating, so I couldn't tell for sure how many chicks there are.

I'll update the cam link page and kestrel nesting calendar later today when I have more time. For now, here's the cam link:

WOW, Catbird..you are so right...I just read the info about the nest and where it is located...cool

The most I could count at any given time was 3...

Mutenz (I think)...nothing like a rat for a pillow...

Somerset Kestrel Nest Information

Dorset - Both adults were at the nest earlier today. The male is in front and the female is at the back.

Dettingen - I can't tell if the chicks have fledged or not. Yesterday there were two in the box, then none in the box. Just now, there was one in the box.

Somerset - The chicks are getting so big now that they tend to block the cam. The view is usually just one of feathers and feet.

This cam is a hoot..I would record it, but its really jerky for me...

Cute pictures of the Muttenz chicks, SGB! When I checked in this morning, one of the chicks was snuggled up against a mouse in the nest . . . that was probably the same chick using a mouse or rat for a pillow a couple of days ago.

The Somerset chicks are really cute too. Here are some captures from this morning.

SGB - Love the picture of the Somerset kestrels from the Facebook page. It's quite a different perspective on the nest from the outside than from the normal inside view on the cam.
