A new milestone: Weighing more than a kilogram?
That might not sound like a big deal, but it is for someone who only weighed slightly more than 145 grams at birth!
Keeper Jennifer Andrew shares an update on the cubs’ weights:

“Last night, Cub B reached a new milestone. He now weighs over one kilogram (2.2 pounds)!
This might not seem like much, but if you look back to the day the cubs were born, this is quite a feat.
When the cubs were born, Cub A and Cub B only weighed 99.1 grams and 145.3 grams, respectively.
In just one month, they have grown and developed a lot!
They are no longer pink and fuzzy, but have almost full coats and their relatives’ signature black-and-white markings.
Being the smaller of the cubs, Cub A is usually one step behind his brother developmentally.
Don’t worry – we expect him to reach this milestone today!”

It's OK, boys. You'll sail past 200 pounds soon enough.
For now, we're savoring your cub-hood and weights in grams!
Thanks to Dr. Hayley Murphy for the photo above.
Move over, bro ...

Looks like there's plenty of room for everyone in the incubator. Is Mom taking a meal break?
We can't wait to see these guys play! Thanks to Jen Webb for the cozy view.

Glad Lun Lun is doing so well. No pressure to lose that baby weight! And the cubby pictured is adorable, of course! Wonder when they will open their eyes.

Cub Confidential: Day 31: Two Cubs and Two Personalities!

Who's Who?
While the boys might have been born only two minutes apart, they are complete opposites! Jen Webb, Keeper I, has been keeping note of their individual personalities:

“The cubs' personalities become more distinct each and every day, and it's a true joy to watch. Cub A, the firstborn and smaller of the two, is definitely the needy one. He's always fussy about something and always has an opinion to share about anything that happens in his little world. Cub A also likes to sleep more than eat during the night, which can be a little frustrating as we want him to grow big and strong.

I am amazed at how big they are. To think that they started out just a little over a month ago the size of a stick of butter to this! Lun Lun is doing a terrific job of taking care of both - even if it is one at a time! :girlluv:

Lun Lun is fast asleep, but Baby is wiggling around. :flirty:

As soon as I posted this, Lun Lun got up and walked away and Baby eventually turned himself over.

Yesterday the one with Lun Lun did turn itself over. Took a bit of work, but he did it. So cute!

Watching now and the little guy with her is "looking" all around. Doesn't look too comfy, but Lun Lun does!! Oh Lun Lun just moved and not all there is a squirming baby panda. Wish I could hear - I bet it is screaming its head off! No Lun is back and has picked him up. She has him covered up. Nursing maybe... Nope, they just moved the cam and his head is right next to hers.

I have learned a lot about panda cub rearing from Deng Tao. We're so lucky to have his expertise! And he is learning a lot about our mom's personality. Lun Lun seems quite content to lie down and cuddle with her cub after it has nursed for a bit, whereas Deng would like her to encourage the cub to nurse for longer periods. Since the cubs can only squirm and roll over right now, it is easiest for them to nurse while Lun is sitting up, supporting their weight. It is also easier for the cub to venture to all four teats to nurse in this position. When she lies down, it's harder for the cubs to get to a teat to nurse. They'll vocalize of course, and Lun is attentive in repositioning her body and theirs, but an upright position is ideal. When the cubs are older and can crawl a bit, it won't matter if Lun is lying down because they'll be able to find a teat on their own. The cubs are still gaining weight, so we're not super concerned. Their weights are actually right on target with their big brothers Xi Lan and Po at the same age! So far, Mei Lan has been the heaviest cub, but not by much. We know this from compiling all the data we have from all five offspring and graphing it together to see if the twins are too heavy or too light compared to their brothers. We weren’t really worried, but having the graphs reassures us that the cubs are gaining weight steadily and proportionally to that of Lun’s other offspring. The analytical nerd in me loves doing data analysis, so this is yet another perk of being a nursery keeper! On a side note, panda cub grunts and "annoyed" vocalizations are ridiculously cute. They get so moody sometimes and you can't help but laugh!

This morning, the panda team was able to get the first cub for its neonatal exam. The cub is robust, fully formed and is a bright, healthy shade of pink. It weighs 137 grams, which is about 4.8 ounces. Its heart rate is steady, and vets were able to hear breathing sounds from both lungs. It's belly was nice and full, it's mouth was normal, and it was obvious that the cub is both eating and digesting food. All signs are that we have a very healthy cub.

The next exam on the cub will be on Tuesday. We won't know the cub's sex or its paternity for two or three weeks.
