Several beautifully clear snapshots from the other Kestrel cams! Thanks to all. Interesting also the Worcester nest on the ridge. Via the Italian forumI noted a Hungarian - link:

link ---> Kestrel in Hungary

Image
Snapshot by Italian forummember Sandrobico

Elyakim Lesser Kestrel - snapshots from yesterday:

Image
Nest 3 - 4 chicks left - # 5 must have died Wednesday. The difference in size with its siblings was larger than of the # 5 in nest 15.

Image
Nest 15 - male feeding and 5 chicks clearly visible.

Haven't watched all day today, just have cam on since 45 min. and didnot see the female of nest 15 turn in for the night - she's usually a bit later than the female of nest 3 and in fact, I donot see her at all, though she might be hidden under the webcam. Still very strange though - one would see her preen and now only the chicks are partially visible from time to time - flapping wings or preening themselves.

Let's watch whether we can see her later on ....

Thanks to all for the updates and pictures!

    - As for the San Clemente female, she always seems to leave one or more eggs uncovered. Could she be a first-time mother?

    - That's sad news about the youngest chick at the Elyakim nest #3 dying. As for nest #15, I hope the female is spotted back at the nest box soon.

    - Wonderful new kestrel cam from Hungary!

I'll update the Nesting Calendar and Kestrel Cam links page shortly.

Elyakim nest 15 - it is now sure - the female didnot return:

Image

Not good. They're barely 10 days old and just this night it's way too cold - only 12 degrees (it was 33C in the daytime Monday, but temps dropped considerably in second half of this week). They huddle together and squeak - and move and reposition continuously.
Let's see what happens in the early morning, how many survive the night, whether the female will show up and if not, what the male will do. (I did notify the people who put up the nestboxes and webcams.)

First shift change is usually around 6:30 local time, which is 11:30 PM for NY / Eastern time and 8:30 PM Pacific. Hope some of you will watch
around that time!

Bosuil - It's 9:41 p.m. NY time, and there's a kestrel keeping the chicks warm. I hope it's the female!

Image

I'll check back on the nest around 11:30 p.m.

Thanks Catbird - so she must have fooled me by coming home unusually early + hiding from view all that time! They're alone now - as are the chicks in nest 3, but just saw M deliver a prey to # 15.

Update - just saw V return w prey - and M delivered already 8 preys - and even counted still 5 chicks (hard to get snapshot of that in time) - so all is well!

Bosuil - I'm glad that was the female!

I just checked the nest again:

    - At 11:31 p.m. NY time, only the chicks were there.

    - Then about 2 minutes later, dad came in to check on the chicks. (I also think he dropped off a little snack at that time.)

    - And then a couple of minutes later, dad came back with breakfast.

Image

And great news now: the female is back with another, bigger breakfast for the chicks!

:hatchegg: Thanks, loza, for the great news about the hatches at Wloclawek. :hatchegg:

Switzerland

In other news, Rhine nest #1 had one confirmed hatch on May 8. Since then it looks as if 2 more eggs have hatched. Here's the picture from May 8.

+ :easterbask:

But this Pusio funny. :egg21: :girlluv:
Came with the mouse in the absence of beads.
He was afraid of their children.
Just as the future mother, took the mouse and fed two children.

17.20 Dinner
