You can see the wing feathers emerging now. Feathers grow very fast, even when baby birds don’t have enough to eat. In that case, “hunger bars” appear on the feathers. The feather is weakened in these areas and can break during flight.

After crying for food for several minutes, this baby takes begging to a new level: he stands up and spreads his tiny wings. Parent patiently waits for a food delivery.

I believe Earl and Pearl are Stock Doves, but the website doesn't identify them.

In early April a pair of pigeons built a nest on the fire escape/balcony of an apartment in the West End of Vancouver.

Two eggs hatched, and the nestlings are about 10 days old. In this video, they are fed crop milk by a parent. Both chicks are hungry!

Second egg hatched: April 27, 2014

Eggs laid about 19 days before the first hatch

Pauline holds a tasty morsel in the air, just above baby’s beak. Don’t worry: he (or she!) gets plenty to eat.

Note the chevron tail. Crows, which are also Corvids, are smaller than Ravens and have tails that are straight across at the end.

When a young Corvid (Raven, Crow, Jay, etc.) is full, he stops begging for food. In the wildlife hospital, these youngsters were very easy to feed. No danger of over feeding and injuring a crop. On the other hand, we had to be careful with other songbirds, who would continue to gape when their crops were full. This Raven knows when he’s full.

A good look at the adult's feathers. For example, did you know she has 12 tail feathers?

Berry College Bluebirds

The Berry College Bluebird Cam is a Hawk Eye Night Owl nest box camera that became operational April 9, 2014.

from FB

Update on the baby bluebird: Dr. Carleton rushed to the nest and removed a very long string or fiber, like the kind used to wrap hay bales, from its throat and stomach. Both parents were there as she tended it and have been in the nest checking on it. The baby is very weak. This is a wait-and-see time. She will assess it tomorrow, see if it eats and strengthens. Thank you for the calls to Berry and for trying to help!

Dr. Carleton has removed the three remaining eggs from the bluebird box and examined them for viability. Unfortunately, she has determined that none of the three is viable. She also believes this is the mother's first clutch. So...we will just enjoy watching this one little bird grow and fledge. Remember, bluebirds in Georgia have more than one clutch in a season so we can look forward to more!

and now

Monday Update:
Dr. Carleton has banded the remaining baby bluebird which is doing well since she removed a long piece of twine or fiber from its throat on Saturday. Thanks to Blake Childers, student photographer, for the picture.

His flight feathers are long and beautiful. Here’s a very short wing exercise, perhaps done in frustration when a nearby parent doesn’t give him a bite to eat.

These are some serious wing exercises! Note that his tail isn't fully grown, and his wing feathers are also continuing to grow.

It's a girl! Dr. Renee Carleton verified the baby bluebird's gender yesterday when she checked the box. She should take flight in about 5 days.

How fast she has grown!

From the outside, the vent of both the male and female looks the same. I'm wondering how she determined this was a female. DNA from a blood test?

Mom drops a piece of food, which she retrieves from the side of the nest. I don’t think the youngster wanted more to eat, after all. Note he doesn’t gape for the dropped food that is offered to him.

Here is video from the fledging of our first little bluebird Sunday night about 8 p.m. You will see mom enters with food in her mouth and then flies out. Baby follows her after a little while.
