Jordan Lake Eaglet Update ~ Avian and Exotic Animal Care: "We know there are a lot of people waiting to hear about the eaglet, so here's the official update so far. Preliminary X-rays showed no obvious fracture, but her right leg is limp and she has no grip strength. She was stable enough for us to do laser therapy this morning and we will continue fluid therapy with the plan on transferring her to American Wildlife Refuge today where she will be transported to Carolina Raptor Center this afternoon. She's not out of the woods and we have real concern about her right leg, but she is definitely more alert and vocal this morning!"

JORDAN LAKE EAGLET UPDATE: I am sorry to report that we do not have good news. The eaglet from Jordan Lake had to be euthanized this morning after surgery to repair a new break in his/her wing.
FROM DAVE SCOTT, DMV, staff vet:
We discovered an open fracture of the left humerus today. It was very close to the elbow joint (wing). We took him to surgery to attempt to repair it but we were not successful. The fracture likely occurred in the last few days and this explains his previously discovered high white blood cell count. Fractures like this are not common but they do happen, and this is one of the main reasons why we try to limit contact and handling of young birds.
In this case, we decided to euthanize the bird as he had multiple other serious issues including a fracture of the tarsometatarsus (leg/ankle) and anemia. We also could not rule out other internal damage or a pelvic fracture resulting from the original fall from the nest. In addition, we had not been able to stabilize his weight and he has been regurgitating more recently. Overall, the prognosis was never very good, but we did our best.

The Jordan Lake Eagle Nest-cam has gone through some major changes this summer after the unfortunate nest collapse of our nest last winter. We have been monitoring the nest site and it does not appear that the pair of eagles will be repairing or re-using the same nest. Instead of a nest focused live feed, we have set up a more all-purpose wildlife camera near the Jordan Lake Dam. For the past several winters we have observed a migrating flock of juvenile and adult bald eagles at the dam site, with some daily counts of 25+ eagles. We also have regular osprey, blue heron, turkey and black vulture sightings, and countless other raptor, songbird, and other species sightings. We have a new camera this year with Pan-Tilt-Zoom capabilities, so we will be able to move the view around and zoom in on things. While we are disappointed that we won't have the opportunity to watch an eagle nest up close, we are also excited about the new viewing opportunities that this year's camera will provide. We are still working on finishing up the installation of the new wildlife cam, and will update the Ustream and Facebook sites once we are getting close to launching the feed.
