Just caught the Alta Murgia female laying her first egg! Had checked for days without seeing anyone home (or cam off line) and my last snapshot was from May 22.

Image
11:59 - first wondered what she was up to, but was suspicious

Image
12:01 - then she got up and called out ("Hey, here's my first egg!")

Now, more than 15 min. later, she still stands there, frozen, looking bedazzled ...

Thanks for all the kestrel news! And thanks for finding the eggs at the Simon King nest, SGB. Here's what I found this morning . . .

England - Simon King: 3 eggs

Image
http://www.simonkingwildlife.com/page/l ... terior-967

Italy - San Clemente: 4 chicks

I'd given up on this nest, because the chicks hatched much later than usual. It must have been because the female wasn't the greatest at keeping all the eggs covered during incubation.

Poland - Kwidzyn (Castle
): 4 chicks?

I'm not sure, but it looks like 4 chicks have hatched now.

Pusio brought lunch for four chicks.
Mouse caught one and wanted to eat it.
Failed. In addition to film, teen ate the most whole in one gulp.
Kuleczka arrived and did not have what to feed the children.
She flew from resentment to Pusio (I think)

:hatchegg: So nice to have the first hatch at Berlin. Thanks Ferenz.

And thanks, loza, for confirming the 4th hatch at Kwidzyn. Those little chicks are just darling.

Muttenz

Bad News:
Kestrel-Dad Boerni did not return to the nest on sunday 25 Mai.
Mom-Bianca was left alone with her five babies.

Good News:
Swiss falken-foermchen made an urgent request to Storchenwarte Sempach & bird hacking station in Moehlin
and got immediate help on 26 May!

5 healthy chicks were successfully brought to their new home - what a relief!

Lesser Kestrels news:

Matera female has laid her 4th egg, no screen capture yet (for the calendar: chat has it it was laid yesterday, but later in afternoon, cam was off line)

Elyakim chicks are close to fledging, the eldest are now 29 days old and almost ready to go. Any time a prey is delivered, a scrimmage ensues at the "window" - look at this:

Image
Nest # 15 - this morning at 8 AM

The smallest chick - still recognisable with its whiter head - in nest 15 has reverted to all sorts of special tricks to make up for its smaller build: he tries to steal prey from the bigger ones, checks the floor for scraps, and when the other four are lined up at the window, he gets into position behind them, bends low and rams underneath ....

Nest # 15 - nr. 5 about to give it a go

Ferenz - What a relief to know that the Muttenz chicks were rescued and are doing OK. I hated to hear about Boerni disappearing, but I was glad to hear about the intervention. The chicks look really darling in your pictures!

loza - Great news about the 5th hatch at Kwidzyn.

Bosuil - Thanks for posting the lesser kestrel news about the 4th egg at Matera and the just-about-to-fledge chicks at Elyakim. That smallest chick at Elyakim must be so smart and so much fun to watch!

Netherlands - Nestkast: Only 1 chick left in the nest now. 3 of the chicks fledged yesterday, 1 fledged earlier today.

Elyakim nest 15 - our courageous, clever little nr. 5 has a very hard time right now - he has to compete with 4 stronger siblings behaving ever wilder, 'cause at this stage - a few days before fledging for the eldest and most developed - each prey delivery is a total frenzy!

This morning, I watched the first half hour of prey deliveries and our nr. 5 is not his usual self: he stands back, retreats from time to time to the corner where they roost (under the cam) and seems unable to join the "wrestling party" - wish him well, esp. having come so close in these four weeks to being our first nr. 5 to fledge and always managing to survive to the next day.
