Israel - Elyakim

Thanks for the news about nest 15, Bosuil. I did watch the nest for a time this morning, and you're right: The older chicks sure go wild and crazy when food is delivered. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that chick #5 will manage to hang on and fledge successfully.

England - Simon King

If a 4th egg is coming, I think it should have been laid yesterday or today. I've checked the nest quite a bit, but a parent was always covering up the eggs. I think the male here is really beautiful!

Netherlands - Nestkast

All 5 chicks have now fledged, with the last chick fledging yesterday.

Who has been watching the Elyakim kestrels this morming and afternoon? In nest # 3, one chick has been pushed out or leaned out to far (morning) - and right now there's only 2 in the nestbox - that is to say, 2 who are alive ... it seems to me that the dead bird one of them is eating from, is its sibling ... very strange what has happened here. Snapshots to follow.

Also in nest 15, only 2 can be seen - and among these 2 is not the smaller # 5 ...

Edit 15:43:
Image
Nest 3 - dead bird on the floor - see talons to the left ...

Image
Nest 3 - chick jumping up and down on the dead bird ...

Image
Nest 15 - only 2 birds home and something suspicious in the right hand bottom corner

FYI - people who run the webcam site have already been informed.

thanks for that information, Bosuil...I am way behind with all the kestrel nests, especially these two..it always seems there are issues at these two boxes...maybe that's why I avoid them)

Thanks for the news, Bosuil, although it doesn't sound too good. I did just check the cam, and there are now 3 chicks clearly visible in nest 15. Even better, all three chicks are moving about. (I think the white fluff that was visible earlier in the lower right corner is the chick that's now in the lower left corner.)

Update from Elyakim:
they have checked both nestboxes, returned the chick that had left nest 15 (it was outside on the window) and removed two dead chicks, one from each nest: for sure the smaller # 5 from nest 15 - "the white fluff" you had noticed, Catbird :-( - and not sure which one it was from nest 3.
It had been noticed in the morning that a chick from nest 3 was missing, but they hadn't found that one.

What an unexpected and sad day for these promising nests so close to fledging time ...

Edit 23:59 -
Found this snapshot I'd forgotten all about: had watched when they "woke up" at 5 AM and got their first preys and I remember wondering what had suddenly happened to it:

Nest 3 - 8:37 - this chick isn't doing well ...

Germany - Steinhuder: The chicks are getting huge! Most likely they will be fledging in the next 2-5 days.

Hungary: Mom has been having a tough time keeping all the little ones covered and inside the box.

Lesser Kestrels:

Elyakim - server problem, cams went off line around midnight.

Alta Murgia - unknown problem, cam off line (last note from 10:18 - seen female and 2 eggs).

Matera - Male has had un unusual long shift of 5 hours - or is it that unusual? I should check notes from last year, if it was also this nest where male did very long shifts. In any case, he had trouble finding a good position and kept changing until just now the female returned:
