Long overdue, ashamed to confess this is my first login of the year - what great snapshots and video's already in those first month(s)!

Just wanted to note that I found also the Israeli Lesser Kestrels in Elyakim are online and a female is roosting in nestbox # 3


Hi loza, that was a great snapshot of the intruding male - he is still young, a 2nd calendar-year male - he still has the "juvenile" feathers in his tail (the striped ones). And great you caught the "interaction" with Pusio - later on! Always a bit frightening to see that though.

Can't find any data about the arrival of the Lesser Kestrels in Israel. Also checked the Italian cams, but they aren't live yet. The Lesser Kestrels that breed in Italy arrive later than those that breed in Israel.

Female roosting in the nest like last night (and who knows how many nights yet ...):



Note - she sometimes disappears out of view, e.g. I didn't see her earlier this evening, though it was already dark and after the time she (or the females from previous years) usually arrives.
Too bad we have missed the return (after the migration) to the nest of the male, and them meeting and discussing and checking the nestbox!

Edit March 11:
Just checked my notes from 2 and 3 years ago: indeed this is about the time (+/- a month after arrival) that the male starts roosting outside the nestbox - at least, so it was for the pair that nested in nestbox # 3.

Over the past years, Myna's (invasive species) have become tough and aggressive competitors for the Lesser Kestrels in Israel. Not so good for this qua population vulnerable species. We probably remember the images of the Kestrel chicks in +/- 3rd week while Myna's were bringing nesting material to the same nestbox ...
