Bosuil - Thanks for the news of the hatches at Elyakim.

Ferenz - Thanks for the egg news at Lausen.

Priscilla - Thanks for the link to the new cam at a second kestrel nest in Zurich. To differentiate this nest from the other kestrel nest in Zurich, I'm calling the new nest "Zurich-Altstetten" (unless someone here has another suggestion).

Zurich-Altstetten

Hi Everyone

Please fine some new webcams including two cams in kestrel nest boxes in Israel
http://www.birdboxisrael.org/Bird-Webcams.html

Once the eggs hatch we will replace one of the cameras and fix the other.

Thanks to charterm for the link to the new cam at Emek Jezerel, which also provides access to the WBAIS cam that we already had a link to. And thanks to loza and Bosuil for all the other kestrel nest news. I just updated the Kestrel Nesting Calendar and the Kestrel Cam Links pages to reflect the news.

I was able to see the chicks at the WBAIS nest, and I do believe that there are now 3 chicks!

Thanks loza for all the snapshots of the Wloclawek nest - what a great view (and fun to see the "prey pulling contest and the various arrangements of the 6 eggs ;-) )

As for the Lesser Kestrels in Elyakim - I think all 5 have hatched, but in the first stages after hatching, it is always hard to see in the far away corner with this cam and this view. It's so great to see this Lesser Kestrel male taking care so well of the chicks (listening so well to his instincts): he provided several preys before hatching started, he finally started feeding the first chick that hatched when female took long to return - just like the female would do (with encouraging sounds and all!). Still now, the female lets him take shifts at the nest for longer times and he is keen to feed the little ones. Plus - he's a good hunter - brings lots of good preys (numerous insects), there was at least another mouse while I watched (good for the new hatchlings).

Image
6:57 PM (local time) - M feeding the chicks from stocked prey

Image
7:15 PM (local time) - F turning in for the night - she has to encourage M to get up and let her take over ;-) !

Lesser Kestrels in Matera

The nestbowl is already well prepared (quite deep) - both sleep in the nest. M regularly puts preys for F in the nestbox - yesterday, an insect, this afternoon, he left her a mouse!

Image
F returns to the nest and finds the mouse - after eating "from the fist" first, she downs it like Owls do.

Thanks, Bosuil, for the Elyakim news. It's nice to hear how the male does such a great job providing for his family and helping out with the chicks. He sounds exceptional.

It's also nice to see the kestrels at the Matera nest. I check that nest every day, but have yet to see anyone at home.

 Great pictures today, loza, and great news about 5 eggs now at Lausen.

It always amazes me how close the kestrel pairs are at some of the nests (e.g., Lausen, Hungary, Wloclawek, Elyakim to name just a few). The males appear to be true helpmates to the females.
