Lesser Kestrel, Matera

It was very clear from her behaviour yesterday: during the day, at least 4 x she spent a full hour or more in the nestbox just dozing away. She was dreaming about the egg ;-) !

And here it is (think she's a first time mom):

Great egg news from the Kempten and Matera nests! Thanks Ferenz and Bosuil.

I was especially glad to hear that the female at Matera finally laid an egg. I think you're right, Bosuil, that she's probably a first time mother.

Lesser Kestrel, Elyakim

The cam went down yesterday afternoon (Swift cam as well) and came back on line a few hours ago.
Meanwhile the chicks have become wilder and move about easily in the nestbox (esp. the 2 larger ones).

It's becoming more difficult (since the parents don't feed, just "drop") for the smaller ones to compete. From time to time, the female tries to grab back the prey, when the big one snatches it.

Image
Chick ends up under cam when Mom pulls at prey and drags him around through the nestbox. He wins.

Lesser Kestrels, Elyakim:

Snake inching its way up to F and her chicks! (Couldn't believe what I saw: was reading online, had cam in corner of screen, and noticed an ever so slight movement - and so did F! Just in time.)

2 AM local time - F notices the danger!

Bosuil - OMG, that was scary news at the Elyakim nest yesterday with the snake! And thanks for the news about egg #3 at Matera.

Steinhuder Meer - First hatch today!

Update: I almost forgot to report that the Kempten cam site noted dates for the arrivals of egg #5 for cam 1 and egg #6 for cam 2.

Sorry to have to share this, but it looks like the worst has happened. Unfortunately, nature can be cruel sometimes, and kestrels can be predated by other bird species.

These wings and feathers were found in the field. At the moment I believe that they might belong to the female - I am trying to get confirmation on this.

As I wrote the above, a kestrel returned to the edge of the box but left again almost immediately.

The nestbox has been checked and the "stone" has been removed (and cam angle slightly altered in the process)
Chicks become more adventurous and move about in the nestbox (and check out the corner where the snake disappeared), flap their wings and start prey catch manoeuvres and also:

"Help! I'm almost flying!"

"So there!"
