 I was just watching MILWAUKEE Power''s cam.. The boys are very active. Busby and Murdoch start screaming the minute they see mom or dad flying by (you can see their heads turn in unison.). They both seem to be getting bolder, hopping out on the perch extensions outside the box frequently. Artemis joins in with the screaming, but I didn't see her jump around near as much as the boys....

 Checked the MILWAUKEE power cam. Only 2 juvies in sight today. They were really watching something (maybe brother?) and also wing and leg stretching,. Wing flapping, and preening...

:eggroll: Thanks for another set of great slide shows, Kittenface ! They are so much fun to look through... I especially liked the music for the pictures from the 29th. I was imagining that the adults who have empty nests were dancing to the music...

Injured peregrine falcon needs surgery

Herbert at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center.
We have an update on Herbert, the peregrine falcon that was found with a dislocated elbow this spring.

Herbert’s elbow was back in place for a time, but it has now dislocated again. This time, the elbow will not stay in place without surgery.

Scott Diehl from the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center at the Wisconsin Humane Society states in an email: “We are hoping to perform a surgery that would provide some stability to the joint.”

Whether Herbert is able to be released back into the wild is in question, but he would have zero chance for release without this surgery.

Diehl said, “If he is ultimately non releasable but able to be retained as an educational bird, the surgery will be better for him comfort-wise and health-wise long term.”

We Energies Foundation has approved a funding request from The Humane Society’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Center to aid in Herbert’s necessary surgery.

Herbert was born at our Valley Power Plant 11 years ago. Herbert was nesting at St. Joseph’s Hospital this year. Since his injury had taken him out of parenting duties, two of his chicks were moved to our Oak Creek Power Plant. They were adopted by the peregrine falcons that occupy that nest. The chicks were named Foster and Wheeler, and banded earlier this month.

I am sorry to hear of Herbert's setback. How wonderful that WE Energies is helping with the costs of his surgery, etc.
Good people. :flirty:

"Olivia", at Pleasant Prairie has an interesting traceable background if you go to the Midwest Peregrine database. One of her great-grandparents hatched in Baltimore, Maryland.
"River Ace", "Freedom" and "Mary Ellen" all have been talked about in the peregrine history literature, and are her ancestors.
That is the best thing about that database, is anyone can use it, and people that are into genealogy, find it fun!
Kudos to those people with that foresight! :smilehat:

I use the Midwest Peregrine Society Data Base and lament when it appears that a clearly read band is not listed. Does anyone have databases for other parts of the country? And Canada too? A while back I emailed the Midwest Peregrine Society and never heard back.

I Do not know about how Canada has it's info set-up.

The BBL is the closest thing the east coast has, however it is a third party organization. Many of the east coast states have one person that controls the info for that state.
My Two Cents:
There lies the problem with the public getting timely or traceable info.
If info is hoarded and hard to access, people will lose interest quickly, and the reasoning for banding becomes a mute point, if one has to jump through too many hoops to find out!

I'll throw in my 2 cents...After talking with Carly about this issue on several occasions, it appears that it takes an act of Congress, or in this case a proclamation from the Queen to get band info in Canada. There is no public database...however, if you keep up with the blog entries on CPF, you'll be able to find the current year band numbers for all the nest they monitor..but, it takes time to do so..but, that's what I've been doing for the nests we follow here..

I also know, for fact, that even some of the USA DNR's do NOT submit to the data base..and some individuals within those DNR's firmly believe those band numbers should NOT be released to the public. I have yet to understand the logic behind keeping band numbers secret!! Even some of the state DNR's that used to make yearly banding reports public, have stopped doing so. PA is a prime example..They don't submit to the database, they don't want to make numbers public, and they stopped making yearly reports easy to find in a google search...However, I cracked their code (by accident)...hee hee and was able to track back, locate internal departmental communications for various years, and actually find their yearly banding reports..They call them: Pennsylvania Game Commission Bureau of Wildlife Management Project Annual Job Report..(of course, there are a lot of subtitles in the document pointing to falcons..)

Anyway, its gonna be a moot point for 2016, at least for Ohio...who knows how many other local or state DNR's will continue banding in 2016.

:thankyou Thankyou for the slide show, Kittenface. Today I didn't see any juvies til 2:00 at Miwaukee County, and 11:00 at Presque Isle. Does that mean they are hiding down in the nest box, or are they out flying and just stopped in at the nestbox?

I believe they have all started to fly around and just hit the nestbox once in a while now. Milwaukee has a pretty good ledge right below the rail so they could be hanging out down there.
