SE15 UPDATE 10th Nov 12:30pm
Message from Taronga Wildlife Hospital Media below. Why media? In spite of us asking people NOT to call there, they have been inundated with calls. They are an extremely busy facility with lots of other patients.

*The young sea-eagle is very sick and is currently being treated in the Intensive Care Unit at the Taronga Wildlife Hospital. Recent blood tests of his blood were abnormal indicating that the bird has an infection and it is being currently treated aggressively for this infection with antibiotics. The eagle's feather development is abnormal and some of the feather have been sent away for further testing to determine what might be causing this. The young sea-eagle's chances of survival are 50/50. The young sea-eagle is resting comfortably in the intensive care unit.

*This message came from one of our chatters (this is the email being sent out by media relations. It is correct).

Thank you for the update, bonbon. Hoping the best for this young eagle. And I hope that the phone calls stop for the sake of all the animals the Taronga Wildlife Hospital staff members are treating.

Se McGregor (one of the key moderators/zoomers) added the following as a reply to other comments on Facebook:

15's condition is not described as "grave". 50/50 are about the same odds as when we took him there last week. In my case the 50/50 was "my" assumption rather than a stated fact. They didn't tell us and we didn't ask, because the blood tests weren't back. The test results - hopefully - should indicate the cause of the feather loss.

The high WBC was also mentioned last week, probably in a response, rather than in a main post as was the anti fungal treatment (probably a precaution because they said that it is common for fish eating birds to have fungal bacteria in their gut.

I'm not an avian vet, but I do know of other rehab wild birds that have been given daily antibiotic injections for up to two weeks. Apart from the feather loss, he was outwardly calm, eyes were bright, he didn't "look" sick.

This interpretation of the same basic facts seemed a bit more hopeful, even though he is by no means out of danger, and it seems that there has to be some sort of underlying (and hopefully treatable) issue causing his primary feathers to be damaged and break or fall out as they grew to full size. And I think it's hopeful that it was only the primaries and a few secondaries that seemed to be affected and not the other 7000(?) feathers - though of course those feathers are essential for flight.

Keeping fingers crossed.
(There were many emotional comments by posters when the original post was written; this was in response.)

SE15 Update - 19th November 9am

We have heard back from Taronga Wildlife Hospital.

SE15 is doing well - "bright and bubbly" was the quote.

White blood count has improved and he is no longer in intensive care.

Odds are better than 50/50 - but we don't have an exact number.

The blood tests are still not back

- they did say a couple of weeks but they weren't sent till the 5th.

We should have a more comprehensive report later today or tomorrow.

Thanks for your patience.

UPDATE on SE15 - 29th November 8pm
According to the senior veterinarian (Larry) at Taronga Wildlife Hospital (TWH), SE15 is doing really well and they hope to release him from quarantine soon.
They are very pleased with SE15's progress and are pretty sure he is indeed a male...however, the elusive bloods including DNA have not come back yet. Larry said that SE15 is a very amiable eagle (of course "our" baby is chilled!).
Regarding the donations we collected for TWH, the money will go directly to them, towards essential equipment supplies.

# mini UPDATE on SE15 - 8th December
We are expecting an official update from TWH but it hasn't come through yet. In the meantime, here is the latest!
SE15 is now eating properly, on his own - food is not being chopped up for him!
The blood results are not back yet. We were initially told they would take around two weeks,
however we've subsequently learned, these tests normally take at least 4 weeks.
That's it for now.

# UPDATE on SE15 - This media release was sent to us by TWH last week but it went astray due to a mix-up on email addresses.
**************************************************
A fledgling male White bellied Sea eagle is in care at Taronga Wildlife Hospital.
He was rescued after falling to the ground when attempting to fly from the nest at Sydney Olympic Park.
The bird is unable to fly as his flight feathers have developed abnormally.
As a result, the sea eagle cannot be returned to the wild as he would not survive.
Taronga Wildlife Hospital Veterinary staff have conducted extensive testing.
Various potential causes for the abnormal feathers are being investigated.
The sea eagle’s health is improving and he is now eating well and gaining weight,
however his flight feathers continue to be a concern.

Should it be necessary in the future, Taronga would be able to continue to care
for the eagle at Taronga’s Bird Show,
where he would become an ambassador for wildlife conservation
and provide educational opportunities for thousands of visitors.

UPDATE on SE15 -12th January, 2016
SE15 has been diagnosed with beak and feather disease. This condition is also referred to as:
• Non-Psittacine (meaning: not a parrot) beak and feather disease (PBFD)
• Non-Psittacine Circoviral Disease (PCD)
• Circovirus
This disease is so rare in raptors, there is almost no information available on longevity, treatment (if any), whether it is contagious or how it is contracted.
SE15’s condition has deteriorated in the last few days. New feather growth is showing greater malformation than previously noted. His beak is now showing some deformity. His condition is being closely monitored by the head vet and all the staff at TWH.

:tissue: Thanks for the update Priscilla. It sounds as if they don't expect the little guy to make it or they anticipate putting him down. Sure hope he pulls through.

So sad...ya know, this is one of the diseases I researched, trying to find ANY information about Blaze's curly and deformed feathers. thankfully, I don't think her beak was ever affected. I sure do hope he can pull through. maybe during all of this, we can learn a little more about this disease...poor baby...

SE15 UPDATE - 18th January, 2016

We have some sad news regarding SE15. His condition worsened and euthanasia was deemed necessary. :tissue:

According to Larry Vogelnest, the senior vet at Taronga Wildlife Hospital:

“He has deteriorated recently, appetite reduced, demeanour changed and his beak had to be trimmed so he could eat. I also feel now that it is unlikely he will ever have normal feathers. All new feathers coming through are abnormal and often break easily resulting in haemorrhage. It was no longer in the birds best interests to keep him alive in the faint hope he may recover.”

A necropsy has been performed and extensive testing will be undertaken to learn more about beak and feather and its associated pathology. SE15’s legacy will be that this information may contribute towards the understanding of how this virus affects raptors. We have also received a pathology sample for POP (Persistent organic pollutants) testing. This sample, when analysed will be compared to the other data we’ve gathered over the duration of this research project.

We would like to thank Taronga Wildlife Hospital for doing such a wonderful job caring for SE15.
