CROW update (from Eagleholic):
Here is what CROW posted on their Facebook page today:

“E8 is currently fighting an infection in the broken bone of the right leg and is receiving daily antibiotics. A culture was taken to identify the bacteria causing the infection so the eaglet can receive the highest standard of care possible. E8’s blood work came back normal and the eaglet continues to eat on its own and is perching. The eaglet will not be moved back outside to the small flight enclosure until the infection clears.”

Cams taken down for the season:

Southwest Florida Eagle Cam
4 mins ·
After the latest storms and no luck reaching the cameras, we have decided to remove them from the trees. Scheduled removal for Cam 1 & 2 will be tomorrow. Cam 3 was removed today.
It's bittersweet to end Season 4 with the future of the nest unknown and E8 continuing to recover at CROW - Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, Inc. but also a reminder that we are simply observers in the circle of life and grateful for every minute we have had to watch & learn from these amazing raptors.
Thank you all for making Season 4 one we will never forget!
We hope to see you next year! <3
The SWFEC Team & Pritchett Family!

Update from CROW on E8. They are saying the infection is serious!

:15heartbeat:

My take on the chemistry profile is that it is normal @ this point. I don't know why they chose to post the results as positive/normal as this is unheard of.

This is a CMP:

This is a BMP:

They have done either the complete or the basic panel. Regardless, the individual results are expressed as normal, or high, or low. By adding the word positive, I think from the comments posted @ their site that people think it is POSITIVE for an abnormal result. And if that is what they mean it would have been helpful to indicate what is wrong specifically: kidneys, liver, dehydration, etc. The CMP and BMP above are the normal ranges for humans.

Thanks for the explanation, Swin.

I think you're right -- they're trying to say E8's blood chemistries came back normal. I notice that they failed to mention the results of the culture that they took on Monday. The culture would tell them what bacteria are present and what antibiotic would best treat it. It would also be helpful to know if they took a blood culture (which they probably did) and what the result was, to rule out septicemia.

I thought they went in for the last of the pins a little early. I wonder if they have been culturing the hardware @ removal or they saw something and the ATB'S were actually started last week. With osteomyelitis, I bet they did BC'S. This is a post-operative infection. It is a risk in any surgery. Unfortunately, osteomyelitis is one of the worst infections to treat and requires weeks of ATB'S. And then can still rear it's ugly head. Here is more info on osteomyelitis in humans.

I agree bonbon, I think he's looking good. Bright eyed. He's still on antibiotics though. I guess they will know for sure if the infection is gone after he finishes the full course of antibiotic therapy, which can take weeks. If it's osteomyelitis in the bone, that's tough to treat. Hopefully, it will be eradicated and won't rear it's ugly head again once the antibiotics are discontinued. He's in the best of hands. This poor baby has been through so much. Such a fighter. I really hope he makes it. :15heartbeat:
