Thanks Shep. I wonder if those eggs are viable. If they never reached freezing temps in those two hours while she was away, they may be OK. Here's a pic of her at 11:59 am today, covered in ice from freezing rain/sleet. Gives one a real appreciation for these birds and what they have to withstand.

Yes Nadia thats what she looked like, poor thing.
I watched an owl a few years ago.
She was off eggs over an hour - dont recall the temp.
Both eggs hatched.
I am not hoping so - I wont get disappointed.

Not a good sign. Altera left the eggs at 4:30 pm and has not returned. It's been 3+ hrs now at 33 degrees. :coldwinter: I think these eggs may end up gone like the 1st two. Not sure if her long hiatus from the nest is because she is a new mother or whether she is just not too keen on this nest location.

Altera left her eggs at 4.30 pm January 14th and they have been uncovered 10 hours.
Noises in an urban setting are too much for her.
Inside the house, kids and dogs outside under her balcony,
sirens screaming by
and then of course the nasty ice storm!
That did it. She didnt want to set her eggs.
They can both be heard hooting - sometimes in reply to a train passing.

young bird, first clutch, city noises scare her - no owlets this year
its not impossible he will take her to a new location away from noises
Its easier for us emotionally if eggs fail, as opposed to seeing an owlet perish.

Yup! I agree.

On that same note, I don't think Mrs. GHO at Landings, Savannah, Georgia is too keen on the tree post storm. It is very out in the open with no cover. Time will tell, but we may get some Osprey there instead.

I did hear Savanah owl make that squawking sound today.

I heard crows at OKC - crows got 2 eggs last year.
They can have these 2 eggs this year.
Altera wont be back

OKC owl
Jan 15, 2017 - Shepnotes
7 pm

A bit ago an owl landed on the rail,
looked down at the eggs, paused, flew off
There is debate whether it was the male or the female

I had heard the male far off, hooting, coming nearer,
did NOT hear the female
so I believe it was the male who came to mourn,
and to bid his offspring goodbye

An owl's sorrow
Jan 16, 2017 - Shepnotes

Jan 15
- An owl landed on the rail, looked down at the eggs, paused, flew off.
There was debate whether it was the male or the female.
Someone posted pics, and the mods admitted it was Mr.
I had heard the male far off, hooting, coming nearer, did NOT hear the female
so I believed it was the male who came to mourn, and to bid his offspring goodbye.

Mr T says goodbye - my notes off video
He hooted 6 minutes before she hooted back.
I think he's weeping and calling, begging.
First he hooted from up on the rail.
Then he jumped into the planter.

Animals do grieve.
These are his babies and he knows it. He brot a vole, he hooted 6 minutes, calling her or weeping - your choice. 6 minutes into video she replies. Mr even tried to feed his babies. I saw that once before - a male owl tried to feed his eggs when female was away. He is very aware they are his offspring, .... and they are lost ... and he is helpless. Poor guy.

loza - thank you for this video, and the confirmation it was Mr
man, thats a heart-breaking scene

I wonder what they will do with the eggs this year for Rusty and Iris? Last night, I witnessed a canoodle and Rusty offered Iris a food gift, which she rejected. There was some discussion on chat that she may be getting broody and close to egg laying. Last year, they did not allow the eggs to develop while they compiled all the research data. It would be nice if they allowed them to have chicks again that could be set free and wild. These two are such a sweet couple. Iris clearly rules the roost, but she is very close with her companion and beau.

Minnesota

A few years back, Karla thot that area had too many GHO.
If that has changed, perhaps she will let Iris eggs hatch.

Oklahoma
Mr T comes very near and hoots but I didnt see him this morning.
I think I heard the female, but too far off to be sure.
She is NOT coming back - too much human stuff for her.

I believe she will re-nest in a less busy tree, so kept specific notes today

3.10 am Heard Altera squawk - food begging - very distant (sound up FULL)
3.30 am Heard Altera squawk - food begging - very distant, then closer,
- again - its echoing as if between buildings or inside a - garage?
3.54 am I hear both hoot - distant - my guess is she was flying around and squawked in more than one spot
4.04-4.08 am Dear dedicated Dad Mr T visits, perching on far rail, low chuckling hoots, then louder, as if talking to his young for a minute or so, then flies off rail to a place nearby out of sight and hoots normally
4.08 am Altera hoots , very distant - calling Mr to wherever she is.

4.13-4.23 am Mr hoots again, still near but not in sight, hoots, hoots
4.23 am A hooted strongly but NOT near in reply to Mr hoots. I figger she is saying - NO WAY HOSAY!
4.25 am Mr GONE, hoots further off - he's going to where she is
5.15 am Both hooting - distant - also train hooting lol
5.24 am Mr hoots - distant
5.50-5.56 am Both hooting, whoa! the mating squeel. Good chance they are re-nesting elsewhere
5.58 am Train hooting
The past hour very busy with people leaving for work, human noises

I got a screen shot of Mr

Thanks Shep. I wonder if Altera can re-clutch after already doing so. That would be a lot of eggs. Egg production uses a lot energy and reserve. Obviously chickens do it, but I don't know about a 3rd clutch for raptors???

I dont count laying her first 4 eggs as 2 cluthchs.
thats just me of course.
She ate her first 2 eggs so replenished her calcium.
She has been heard mating at least twice.
I heard them once - another heard them the day before.

The reason I listened close and kept notes today is to be and ear witness to whatever I could - to seek to discern if she is re-nesting somewhere. I thot she would - as they are still in the window of time.
She may lay one more egg, she cud lay 2 - but away from the close human noises.

I think Jeff needs to HIDE his cameras.
I think the EYE of the cameras all over spooked her.
On top of that its very noisy - and owl hearing is better n mine!

I dont know if owls mate outside breeding season or not.

So - bottom line - I think she has a new nest

Entry by Jeff Click, OKC owl
3:00 pm CST, Wednesday, Jan 18th
After several days of no activity at the pot with the eggs, it is safe to say they have been abandoned and are non-viable. While this is sad news, we have seen signs that give us hope for another shot at Season 5.

Just around the corner from this nest pot is the pot chosen by the Tigers for Seasons 2-4. For the past few nights, we have seen both Mr. Tiger and Altera prepping this pot the same way they did the previous pot just before eggs were laid. Mr. T has been aggressively coaxing her to this location, bringing food and calling for her for up to a half-hour, which is unusually long for him to stay in one place. Quite a bit of digging has also been done.

There has have been indications (by those who would know, which is not us...) that sounds being heard off-camera the past several nights are consistent with owl copulation vocalizations. We've also been told that Altera laid eggs early enough in the season that it's not out of the question for them to "try again." We believe that is what is taking place.
Bear in mind, nothing is certain. The past 3 months have proven that as it relates to the Tiger Family and this stream. We don't aim to get your hopes up, and we acknowledge that this may lead to disappointment if nothing comes of it. Our position has always been to observe and appreciate nature's process and to give you an up-close viewing of it along with us. Consistent with that philosophy, we've placed a camera on the potentially new nest pot and have turned the stream towards that area in hopes that we all get to witness their re-courting and nest-prep process.

Watching a plastic box full of organic dirt has never been more riveting for some of us who "get it." But watch closely, as they arrive silently. And maybe, just maybe, they'll stay long enough to make something of it for us all.

Just as I thot! She will re-nest!
But if here - she was closer than it sounded to me
