And Tahoe's nest box is only 7 miles (as the crow flies) away. The male here at this box (Lightning) is the same male that abandoned Tahoe her first year leaving her to raise the babies herself (which she did quite well).
Lightning came here and killed Hoffman, and helped the unbanded female raise those babies that were not his.

Fast forward to now, and she overwinters here. If the unbanded female never returns one of these years, Tahoe will likely stay here and finalize this box as her first choice was here, three years ago.

I just wish the cam operator could have caught the male's band yesterday. I don't think it is Lightning anymore. Just a personal opinion.

I remember Tahoe raising her young by herself and being deserted. I get confused at some of these sites as I do not frequent too much but try and keep track.
thanks Matrix and tsusuan for giving me the lowdown . I hope if she gets to stay here it is not lightning who is male ( or maybe she will be more loyal to her )

Gord has always told me that if a better site becomes vacant, they will leave theirs in a heartbeat. I guess lightning felt that Hoffman was weaker.

:6snowflake: when I first checked, there was a male hanging out on the ledge. Then Tahoe swooped in, and they briefly bowed to each other. They both leaped into the lower nestbox area, and were gone for a minute or so. The male jumped back on the ledge (I think I spied a red/black band) and left. A moment later Tahoe jumped onto the ledge and remains there, preening...

TSusan, a few weeks ago, there was an absence of a week of any activity at the box. It was out of the normal for here, so I thought maybe a new male took over during that time frame.
I see there was a zoom again today. But whoever is zooming, keeps missing the male and keeps zooming in on Tahoe.
Too bad they won't let the public control the cam, it would save them some work and time.

and the male is hanging out in front of the cam right now...in perfect position for a zoom, and no one is zooming. LOL

:6snowflake: Oh, MATRIX! I am so glad you are keeping an eye on Tahoe too. Sometimes when I watch I'm just not sure what to think about it... You don't think this male is neither Lightning nor Asa? Talk about musical chairs.... And I worry about the resident female returning, too. Thankyou for explaining some things to me! Ps - Glad to see you must be better from your cold (saw it on Mystic's Facebook page).

3snowflake: Wow, Ferenz- she really looks formidable in that catch! I just feel that the resident female is going to be coming back any day.... I wonder how much of a fight Tahoe is going to put up this time.... Two years ago she flew away as soon as the other female arrived. Last year they fought with each other in the nestbox until Tahoe left again. And now this year.........?
