Whenever my lawn is about to be mowed, I walk the whole perimeter to check for bunny nests. A couple of years ago my husband almost mowed over a nest cause he didn't know it was there, but fortunately one of the babies jumped out of the hole just before he got to it, so he was warned that there was a nest there. I also have to check for toads, cause I mowed over one a few years ago... :-(

Kitten, if they baby rabbits are out of the nest then they are fine. Once their eyes open, they begin to eat on their own. Rabbit nests are usually hard to see unless you see the momma there at dusk or dawn feeding. They build many in open grass or under bushes. They line them with their fur, then cover them with leaves or grass. Unfortunately many people run over them with lawnmowers because they have no idea they are there. They are always well concealed. Baby rabbits also have a really low survival rate in rehab. They go into shock very easily.

Oh Thank You I see so many and they look so little but now I can rest easy

Thanks for that story. It's sad.... but realistic. Around 50% is the success rate for injured birds. Sometimes their injuries are too severe. Sometimes we can't get them to the hospital in time. But humane euthanasia is preferable to a long and painful death.

Posted on the Dunedin, FL home page. More Bald Eagle problems!!

The bald eagle nest in Dunedin, which was the foster nest for 'Hoover' fell in the early morning hours. One eaglet was rescued first thing this morning and the other two remained in the nest tree which holds only remnants of the former nest. Everyone at the nest appears to be fine this afternoon, however, the eaglet which was rescued is not doing very well and transit is being arranged to the Audubon Bird of Prey Center in Maitland, Florida. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-SRMIkfjGM

An update on eaglet rescues from Barb Walker on the Dunedin, FL Cam site.

WARNING: don't read the comments at the end of the video, unless you have a very strong stomach :tearhair

I think the video said the bird would be put in a special large cage to learn to fly... that can't be bad. We put our large seabirds into our huge pelican aviary where they recover and fly... and then they are released when they pass all of their tests. Did I miss something?

The written comments made me sad, but at least there were rescuers to take care of the eaglets, and that is certainly good. :)

I agree that those comments are sick--if they don't have anything intelligent to say, they shouldn't say anything at all! :x

We are just starting to get a few baby birds. So we have some time on our hands. I wish I had my camera with me last Tuesday, because we had a tiny Green Heron, almost bald, and a tiny Killdeer. The Killdeer's mother and brothers and sisters were killed by a cat.

Now you need a happy story, and here it is:

A domestic mallard brought to IBRRC in January had pennies removed from its gastrointestinal tract.

Jay Holcomb of IBRRC explains how "Penny" the duck was successfully treated by our staff and veterinarian at our bird rescue center in Northern California.

She was released the last week of March. She gave Mr. Holcomb a good bite while he was preparing her for release.

This is the best eagle release I've seen. Instead of being thrown up in the air, the eagle is allowed to leave the carrier with dignity and grace.

Beans, your posts are always to the point..

Many birds, but not the majority, released after rehab are "thrown up in the air"... As I'm sure you know, this is done for PR to help raise money for the next bird, not because the bird needs help lifting off. If the bird needed help flying, it wouldn't be released.

I don't know the history of this eagle, but I'm sure it was very happy to be flying...no questions asked.

I hope, as an obvious adult, he/she has not been separated from it's mate for long.

It would be great to know the history on this bird

Nice story on Penny beans. I rehab ducks, and its always a good thing when the are obviously not imprinted, which was certainly the case with her. Beautiful Eagle release too...from 2004. I know the Wildlife Center in VA always releases eagles where they were found (if they know).
