Its not a matter of 'blaming' the parent.

There is no need for me to post about something I am not definitive about. I would rather not speculate. There could have been many different reasons for the demise of B13.

I have some more time now till I will be out completely for a short while. I have gone back on the DVR and viewed B12 while parent off. B12 was able to move it's right wing, left wing, left leg. I could not see right leg, because it is obscured from view. When left leg is moved I can see lift in the hip area on left. I never see lift from right hip area, even though I would expect to if she were moving that leg. It could be there is something from under her keeping her from pulling that leg up, but allowing her to turn or be turned. I do not know. It would certainly be better if outside source rather than medical. Either way, I fear her only hope is intervention and I do not know Berry's position on that. Her vocals are holding up @ this point.

Something light blue is draped over B12 @ or near neck, I think!! Am going back in to watch DVR. The sun will be setting soon and I don't know if what I saw is real or just because of the angle of the sun. It is too late tonight for an intervention. Sunset is not far off.

The whole nest is awash in blue tones now d/t the setting sun. I could not distinguish if what I saw was an inanimate object or simply a single piece of nesting material draped over the back of B12's neck that the angle of the sun caught. Obviously, it is time for me to take a break ...

:girlsad3: Tonight I can continue to hear an occasional chirp from her. I went back on the DVR using the old IE to see if it would go back to last eve, but it was only going back about 14 -15 hours. I could see B12 from this morning till now and there is certainly a marked difference in her condition, in this time frame. B12 while sluggish and quiet, still had more control of her body then. I don't know if this is a medical issue or possible entanglement of some sort. Sluggish and quiet make me think medical, but her struggle @ times today and going deeper and deeper in the bole, I can see where you could think entanglement. When I saw her @ a little past 6:30 ( I think) last night on the DVR, I was alarmed because she was quiet and her position appeared slumped when the parent stood up. I went back to see when she was normal last and that was @ 5:57. She had just finished eating I think and then was covered by the parent @ that time to brood and was brooded until parent got off of her just past 6:30. I checked 4-5 times last night over that 30+ minute time span scanning the DVR to see if she was awake or up or if anything had happened to her and all I could see was her being brooded. Finally telling myself it may just be a food coma as B12 had finished eating and had been brooded for a little over 30 minutes. But it was not a food coma. It was the beginning of whatever is wrong with her now. I never ever, thought we would be in this position that we find ourselves in with B12 and it is absolutely heartbreaking for all!!

:sorrow: B12! At 0700 after arriving several minutes before, Pa has made his way to the nest bole and tucks B12, but there is no response. He then begins to brood. Surprisingly, B12 seems to be higher in the nest than last eve. Ma had left about 10' before and when Pa came down from the branch he ate first before going to the bole. I went back on the DVR and found that Ma had not actually brooded over the last couple of hours, but had stood @ the bole to sleep. As I leave Pa continues to brood B12.

SAD DAD
Feb 26
8 am
Dad flies in Mom leaves
He keeps looking at his baby, looks around, looks down
He appears to be making a sound but I cant hear it

Absolutely NO movement or sound from the eaglet
8.50 am he still stands over the remains
It'd be LESS sad if he covered it and left, instead of grieving.
I wouldnt watch but I wonder if he'll remove it as he did the first

As with all passings, tho expected, still sad

:tissue: :sorrow:

Ma returned @ 8:05 with a fish and Pa leaves with a quick look at Ma first, but no vocals. She stood there looking @ B12 alternating with looking out and about and @ one point she moves the nesting material over her feet and fish some. Finally, @ 8:26 she moves toward the nest bole with her back to us and continues to look @ B12 and around and preens some. She is still standing in this position as I leave. Berry has released a statement:

Berry College Eagles

We are sad to report that B12 has died overnight. We have been in contact with the Department of Natural Resources since Monday to monitor and assess B12's condition. Unfortunately, things took a quick turn for the worse overnight. As of right now, we do not know the cause of B12's death. We will provide more information if it becomes available.

It is very important now that we do what is best for the eagles and not interfere with the nest. If we tried to intervene now, we could risk injury to the eagles, or even risk nest abandonment.

The nest live stream may be disturbing to young children and other sensitive individuals. It is possible that one of the parents may eat the eaglet's body or move it to the side of the nest where it would decompose.

:15heartbeat: Some very tender moments here. Ma ate some fish and flew @ 9:50 only to return @ 9:52. In a few minutes, she begins covering B12 with some nesting material partially. Soft vocals from Ma @ 1008. Pa returns @ 1014 with fluff. They begin tossing fluff and when Pa steps away to place a stick in the rails he's picked up off the floor of the nest, you realize they had completely covered B12 with the fluff. It is a precious moment. At 1024 Ma leaves after eating fish. Pa eats fish pieces Ma had dropped and then some squirrel. He returns to the bole @ 1035 and moves B12 slightly in the bole and then he broods B12. After a long while you can hear Ma with vocals from a distance and Pa returns calls and @ 1108 she returns with more fluff. Pa leaves and B12 is partially exposed. Ma covers the bole with the fluff. She is still standing @ the bole as I leave.

:15heartbeat: Nest exchanges continue. Ma remained standing @ the nest from earlier till leaving @ 12:58 and Pa returns and aerates the bole and minor restorations to the rail. Eventually he moves to the bole and broods and he is in this position as I leave @ 1:42. :15heartbeat:

We've received many questions about the recent heartbreaking deaths of our two eaglets. At 3 p.m. Wednesday, February 27th, we will live stream a Q&A at https://www.berry.edu/eaglecam/ with Berry Associate Professor of Biology Renee Carleton and Berry College Elementary School teacher Lewis Byrne. The session will be recorded and posted later for those who cannot tune in live. Please comment with your question on this post only. We will get to as many as we can, but will not be able to answer all. Thank you.
