:1val: Laddie and NC0 have just arrived to the nest. Laddie is mantling. He flew off and returned for an attempted mating. Then down to the nest. In time he flew and returned again for a possible successful mating. Then he flew again. NC0 continues on the nest as I leave.

Welcome to the Rutland Osprey Project, England

Find out what exciting happenings have been going on over the past week with the Rutland Ospreys!

What a fantastic week it has turned out to be here at Lyndon Nature Reserve! Despite having to close the Visitor Centre as a result of the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis, the Ospreys have of course, been keeping us very busy and our moods positively elevated (mine personally, is through the roof)!

Since our first Osprey arrived back on 13th March, the past week has seen four more individuals return to Rutland, including our most iconic pair, Maya and 33(11), from the Manton Bay nest. These two, astonishingly, returned within hours of each other, with 33 making his debut on the webcam at around 07:00, and Maya making her first appearance at lunchtime! Though these two arrived on the same day, it is very unlikely that they travelled together, though it is sometimes nice to think, as Ospreys complete their migrations alone.

This past week has been full of excitement since the first egg was laid, and we have been eagerly watching out for another...

The three weeks that Maya and 33(11) have been back in Rutland have simply flown by! One moment they are incredibly busy preparing the nest and then the next, Maya has laid the first egg of the season.

Over the course of the past week, I think it is safe to say we have all been glued to the webcam, keenly waiting for a clue that Maya has laid a second egg. As always with wildlife and nature, having a bit of patience is key, and it certainly paid off! On Thursday evening we were lucky and were able to catch a glimpse of the second egg! We are unable to say exactly when it was laid, but it could have been anytime from Wednesday afternoon onwards. Come the weekend, we were once again drawn to the screen, this time with the anticipation of a third egg being laid. And this morning, perseverance again paid off, with there now being three eggs in the nest! But the question we are all pondering now is, will there be a fourth?

Monty has still not returned home.

... And Finally

We're not giving up on Monty, let's give the poor lad at least another week to show up before we even think of giving up on him.

But, for now, our new male deserves a name; we can't keep calling him 'Newboy' for ever.

DOP is now unstaffed over the Easter holiday, I've just re-calibrated the Live Streaming camera settings to hopefully last us to next Tuesday.
The audio has finally been fixed after hours and days of strife - thankfully it was a software issue.

Starting in the morning we will have a second moderator on the Live Chat;
volunteer Colin has done an amazing job already for the last 11 days, but now he needs some help.

Lastly, I'd like to thank so many of you that have kindly donated to DOP over the last three weeks
- it has been our lifeline that has kept us going. We all need the Live Streaming more than ever during these unprecedented times. Diolch.

Mythology tells us that many moons ago a giant lived in these parts. A giant of such stature that he used a local mountain as a chair;
he is said to have studied the stars from on top of the 'chair';
it was reputed to bestow either madness or poetic inspiration on whoever spent a night on its summit.

Today we call this mountain Cader Idris - Idris' chair.

Our new male osprey is called Idris.

Happy Easter from The Lodge!
Thanks to an eagle eyed viewer of our live osprey web camera,
we've had a sighting of what looks to be one of our local ospreys, Clarach.

This picture might confirm the return of these wonderful birds to the area!

:girlsad3: It's not looking good that there will be a nest to view for Loch of the Lowes this year on cam at least. The ospreys have endured 2 incidents of human interference near their nest within the last 2-3 weeks or so. The 1st was the kayaker and the 2nd was last weekend when a man and his children could be heard talking and the man suppressed a sneeze or cough. Both incidents either caused 1 or both osprey to fly from the nest. Here is an update:

And here is a video of last weekends incident by scyllabub:

So sad to hear about those dammned noise & sneezings by tourists...but there were some more disturbances by an unringed female intruder which was chased by NC0 >> scyllas video:

I guess there is still a little chance for the current breeding pair to return or
another osprey pair might overtake this nest in the following days...

I don't think this can be the female osprey we've already seen,
because it couldn't possibly be confused with NC0.
I can't even say for sure if it's male or female, tho it looks more female in size.
Somebody will now tell me it's 100% Laddie. But there's no Spanish dancer.

if Laddie and NC0 are busy guarding their area they really can't settle/relax
