:1val: No incubation again tonight. This is the area the banded osprey seen on the BH nest several days back is from:

Near Westport Point, Bristol County, Mass.

:1val: Think this is night 14 without incubation. They continue to incubate from very early morning till about nightfall.

:1val: This is night 15 without incubation. Interestingly, Phoebe has shown up in the 2:00 am hour to resume incubation for the day for the previous 2 mornings rather than the 4:00 am hour ...

:1val: This morning, Phoebe again resumed incubation earlier than she had been by coming back during the 2:00 am hour. Tonight is night 16 without incubation.

:flirty: Phoebe tried to incubate the earliest yet in the night! From Poppy:

"Phoebe returned to the nest shortly after midnight, probably triggered by the clear and moonlit night. She stayed almost half an hour until she most probably sensed an approaching GHO. After the owl left the nest, Phoebe returned once again around 3 am and resumed incubation, vigilantly."

:1val: Night 18!. Now Phoebe seems to be coming back even earlier consistently. From mod on her return last night.

"Once again, Phoebe returned to the nest early, at 12:58 am, and resumed incubation at 1:10 am - usually, she arrived around 4 am in the morning since she stopped incubation during the nights. On June 6, she started to return earlier and earlier: at 2:58 am, 2:31 am, 2:38 am, 12:20 am."

:1val: Night 19. Phoebe came back for incubation in the 4:00 hour this morning, I think.

:1val: Last night Phoebe returned a little after midnight to resume incubation. This is night 20.

Edit to add: Phoebe is on the nest at 1:35 am. She returned a couple of hours ago possibly.

:1val: Night 21 without incubation, however Phoebe did return at 11:41 pm last night to incubate. So this might be considered night 20. So far the owl has not disturbed her when she returns. Currently egg 1 is within the hatch window.

:girlsad3: Unfortunately Phoebe returned to resume incubation the earliest yet at about 10:31 pm after having left at about 8:59 per chat times. She was attacked by the owl about 1 1/2 hours after her return. The owl landed on her back and seemed to really dig in as Phoebe rotated on the nest under the owl and was able to escape from it's clutches and fly off the nest. The owl went up to the perch and then back down to the eggs in the nest and seemed to explore them using it's beak. It finally flew off and it is unknown for now if the eggs made it through the attack and the owl's exam of them. Later on, the GBH possibly Humphrey could be heard squawking. I will be surprised if Phoebe attempts any semblance of incubation during the night for the remainder of the hatch window of these eggs. I will be surprised if Phoebe and Steve return to this nest next season. Phoebe was able to fly away and I hope she is okay, but you have to wonder about soft tissue injuries, punctures, lacerations, etc. We'll be able to tell more in the morning maybe ...

Hog Island Osprey
June 14, 2020 Dawn
6.30 am Still no osprey

The owl chased Phoebe away then hung around. He may hear one of the chicks inside the egg. He went to an egg an maybe tried to open it, gave up and left. It is more likely the male owl.

mod poppy
June 13, 2020 at 11:51 pm the GHO attacked once again. Phoebe was on and off the nest several times in the late evening and finally returned an hour prior to the attack to resume incubation. She was able to shake off the owl and escaped. The longer the eggs aren?t incubated ? especially during rain - the more questionable is the outcome

:15heartbeat: Steve returned to the nest at 8:40 this morning. So far, Phoebe has not been seen since the owl attack. In the close-up of the 3 eggs from earlier this morning, no damage seen from that view. Steve is calling for Phoebe from the nest at intervals.

:15heartbeat: Phoebe has not returned as of yet. Steve continues to call out for her. Even though the camp is closed, there were visitors there awhile ago causing Steve to abandon the nest till they moved along and he returned. They were close enough to the nest that you could understand parts of their conversations. The mod reported this to HI staff who are not currently there. Update from mod: HI staff report the HI trails are open to the public. As of 3:03 pm, Phoebe has yet to return since the owl attack last night. The time is 5:35 pm and Steve left the nest a few minutes ago. This is the 1st he has left today that I am aware of. Phoebe has not returned. It's 6:03 and Steve returned to the nest about 15 minutes ago. Steve left at about 7:52.

:15heartbeat: Phoebe returned this morning after staying away from the nest for a day following the owl attack and Steve has just come in to give the 1st break to her. No injuries are discernible.
