:1val: Phoebe possibly caught her own fish earlier this eve. She arrived with it to the perch and soon Steve flew in and landed on her back and stood a bit before flying out. She brought it to the nest to eat after he left. They continue to incubate during the day and away at night.

8 am Phoebe in nest moving branchs. Phoebe replaced the former female this year. They believe she is young. Both osprey leave the nest in the evening and return around dawn. That has gone on for weeks, due to GHO owl attacks at night.

Many of you have asked what to expect now, since it became quite obvious that we won’t have any chicks on this nest this season.

Well, Phoebe and Steve will lose interest in incubation more and more during the next days. We have seen first indicators yesterday already. They will be off the nest more often, roaming the area, exchanging their fish off the nest in nearby trees, too. Steve will continue to provide for Phoebe but she will catch fish on her own, too, as shown yesterday.

Steve will still add nest material, as he did in previous seasons, occasionally assisted by Phoebe. They will rearrange the material - including the eggs. The eggs might end up at the edge of the nest or get covered by sticks, bark, seaweed and other items, eventually. Depending on the temperatures and the thickness of the egg shell, the eggs might even explode due to the decomposition process.

In late summer, Phoebe and Steve will feel the urge to migrate, leaving the area separately to their winter grounds in South America, until they meet again next year in April. I am quite certain that Phoebe is well imprinted to this nest and will return. She has invested much energy in defending the nest and her claim on Steve by chasing off numerous intruding ospreys, reacted smart when Bald eagles were approaching the nest, not to mention the Great horned owls. You’ve seen it all.
