Regarding the Copper Country Audubon peregrine falcon nest boxes on the Houghton/Hancock Lift Bridge:

Both nest boxes have been removed from the bridge due to an ongoing maintenance program. It was announced today that new boxes are being erected atop buildings in Houghton and Hancock.

"Today a group of people from Copper Country Audubon, Michigan DNR and MTU (Michigan Technical University) have placed a new box on top of the North edge of the EERC building on the MTU campus. This box has a webcam up and running already. It may take a day or two for that webcam feed to show up on the MTU Webcam page. The local Peregrines have not been reported to be back but they are due any day.

Hopefully, a 2nd Peregrine box will be placed within a week on the SE face of the Quincy Shafthouse."

The Quincy copper mine is just north of the Lift Bridge in Hancock. The MTU campus is in Houghton, south and east of the Lift Bridge.

There are two pictures of the new nest box accompanying this announcement, which appeared on the Google Group blog for Copper Country Birding, that I'm unable to share here. If someone is a member of this blog, perhaps they can retrieve the photos.

Let's all pray the falcons find the new nest boxes, and do not try laying eggs on the bridge! Fingers crossed for a successful nesting season!

3/17/2021 :: Update on W/V
Followers of PA Falcon Cam are still reacting to the end of the long-time resident male's (W/V) reign at the Rachel Carson State Office Building (RCSOB). Yesterday, the PA Game Commission recovered the body of W/V. Unfortunately, W/V flew into the side of a building and perished.
Looking at the situation in a positive light, this does provide closure. Previous RCSOB falcons have disappeared without any indications as to where they went or if they had survived. The other positive development is that yesterday the first egg of 2021 was laid in the nest box on the 15th floor ledge. This continues the lineage of the most productive falcon nest site located within the Commonwealth. Stay tuned as a tribute to W/V's legacy is currently being developed.
