heads up . chicks may all be pulled tomorrow. Gord thinks they may have coccidiosis . I thought they looked real good, white poops etc. I have spent so many hours watching, for signs. But sometimes there are things that are not caught, except through eyes of an expert.

Nutrien~oh gosh, bev...I hope they aren't sick. Is there a way to test and return if healthy?

They all seemed to have a good feed and were active..and they quit before mom did...I didn't see any poop shots that I know of.

If Gord pulls them..and they are healthy and he doesn't return them? Sorry..I will not be watching this nest again. I appreciate erring on the side of caution...and I certainly support intervention for sick kids...but, if they are not sick and parents don't get to raise them? I will not be a happy camper.

Nutrien

I just opened the cam. chicks are gone. With no DVR, I have no idea when. What symptoms led Gord to believe they were sick? They all seemed quite energetic and robust at the feeding I watched. I feel horrible for the parents.

I hope they are fine and can come back and not kept..

I will be issuing a report. as sad as I am, please know that this was necessary. Gord would never pull a chick for no reason.
the chicks were taken at 13:25.
there will be more to come( don't give up on us )

So, they are definitely positive for whatever he thinks they have?
If so, I say treat, return them, monitor to see if the parents take them back.

I'm all for intervention...but, Gord pulls chicks a lot and while others would return after treatment..he never does. That's the part I'm not happy about. Sorry

Sigh

There is more to this here and I am drafting a report. It is not always as it seems. remember we have had two years of chicks dying at this site before they fledged.

that is such an unfair statement, SGB. ( some chicks need more than a few days treatment. some take weeks. ) . what you suggest is not always possible .

I realize that...I am just frustrated and sad for the parents at Nutrien..you're just gonna have to be understanding from my point of view as well...I realize that some treatments take longer...I am not a dummy...

You, yourself thought these chicks looked good..and stated so in your previous post. Yes, Gord has a much better eye than we do..so, of course we defer to him...

I have noted the removal on the calendar. If you get further info that you want included on the calendar, please post and I will add for clarification.

As you probably know by now, the 3 chicks were pulled from the site. Although I had the cam up 24/7 and watched as best as I could, I missed what only an expert eye would catch. Dr. Court advised that the chicks showed signs of coccidia. The chicks showed signs of being lethargic and signs of having flat flies. As I was monitoring 6 sites at the time, I mistook these signs were as a result of heat. I noticed the night before that one of the chick’s underwings showed signs of flat flies but by then I knew Dr. Court was already going to check them the next morning.

When the chicks were pulled for examination, the female was in pretty good shape but showing signs of gape that the chicks from 2021 and 2022 showed just before they died (we know from last year how quickly the chicks went from healthy to their demise). The two males are very small and one had definitely not been getting enough. All were dehydrated and all had flat flies. (Due to the cam this year, this is something that I could not see as the chicks were always fed in the back of the nest and the cam was very dark.) Thankfully Dr. Court was watching. When the examination was complete, a decision was made by RFOFalcon, in conjunction with Dr. Court, that the chicks be removed for treatment. Although neither Dr. Court nor RFOFalcon wanted to shut the pair down this year, they made the difficult decision that the chicks would not be put back. RFOFalcon indicated, although they would not fledge from this site, they would have a chance at fledging out in the wild at Pembina, which was a Win/Win

Dr. Court has them at home and is treating them there. They will be monitored very closely and when able, they will go out to our breeding facility to be fed by a captive pair and when they are ready will be hacked at the Pembina.

Although this does not sit well with some people, Dr. Court always feels conflicted when moving young from the urban nests to the Pembina but he always does things in the best interests of the falcons. In this case it was removing the chicks to give them a fighting chance.

In the next few days, more valuable information will be posted to help you understand how our falcon recovery program works here in Alberta.

Cheers

Bev

Good to see..

Scotford. So nice to see dad doing a feed...I'm not sure Mom would have approved of his bite sizes...the baby didn't even bother to attend...

These will probably be out of order..
