I posted this in Breaking News:

Not very crazy about posting this. I'm doing it cause SGB needs to update her calendar. Another Great Spirit Bluff juvie, Jaycee, was taken by an owl last night. :tissue: I mistakenly clicked on the youtube video which was on BCAW FB, and all morning I've been hearing Jaycee's scream. :sorrow: You can say what you want about falcons raised in cities and the dangers they face, but I don't know any that's endured the tragicity of the this nest during the past few years. :cryinggirl:

I guess if nothing else, Jaycee's scream carryed off into darkness so she was still alive and perhaps escaped.

i will hold out hope.
I am heart sick . I worried about her as she was on top of box, and light shone on that. I will hold out hope.

owls are a problem all over. they're in the cities also, at least in our cities.
We had one close to the MIscercoirdia box and I worried about our young
but what ever outcome here, this was a success story , in as much as they all fledged.

Lets be glad there were 4 eggs - 4 fledglings - not merely 2.
So hopefuly 2 will continue on and raise broods of their own.

The falcons eat other birds.
Owls eat falcons.

The circle of life- n death . n we watch

NOTE ON EXPLORE
JAYCE seen today - eating ( what else ) :15heartbeat: :egg5:

I agree Bev. and Shep...definitely a success this year...no jumping chicks because of biting flies, etc.

Wait...Shep, Jaycee was seen today? She's OK?

I'm so confused. I thought there was concern that the GHO got her??

As I always say, never say never.
So we have 3 still.
She got away last night. I just watched her eating a small bird. My heart sings.
Will post photo when I get to computer

I don't know if any of you remember this, but a long time ago when we first started watching the WE nests, there was a GHO that kept trying to take the box...was it Pleasant Prairie? Gosh, can't remember...yet the falcons were there. I think Greg Septon got so concerned, the following year, they boarded up that box...or something like that...my memory ain't what it used to be. I remember having a huge discussion on forum about how vulnerable an adult falcon and especially a chick would be in the box...but out in the open, an adult falcon would probably have the upper hand (or talon..) and could possibly injure the much larger GHO if it was caught off guard of if the falcon approached from above....at least that was the theory..

year before last when we had one female juvenile , she went down to left of box area, . thye would have to really zoom down the other cliffs and trees. maybe that is where the others went. maybe safer down there

Stay safe young one.

It was her, Bev. P60!
:10sum:

She must have learned her lesson to stay away from the nestbox at night!

RRP never mentioned owl -
Barbara on Explore posted that.
A couple others began wailing
Then pics were posted of her eating so she's fine.

I WAITED a day before posting what I did - *sigh* .. oh well - I made the correction

bev - thanks for pics!

RRP had plenty of discussions over owls.
One year the owl took one young - came back another night and took the other.
Mama Nova never returned to our box.

Several years ago during the summer I was watching live and saw GHO go inside the box. I thought she was going to nest there. There was LOTS of hooting of both male & female owls.

I remember that--the owl taking the 2 juvies and the black flies. There was a black fly problem a couple of years earlier then last year. This box has so many problems with owls. I don't know what they can do about that. :girlsad3: We enjoy watching this watching this cam so much, but you have to have nerves of steel!

I bet ONE bar'd keep an owl out
They snatch so fast - a bar'd slow it down so parent could stop it

this is nature - it happens - here we just see it
