Alma..

The cam is currently off line...but, sadly, one of the chicks has died...When I checked late Wednesday afternoon, it was still in the box.

Wednesday morning when I checked the cam (I wanted to double check the band numbers), it did not look like it felt good. It seemed very lethargic and wasn't perching like its siblings...I had to leave, but didn't think anything about it until I checked remotely late wednesday afternoon...right at fledge, too...I can't imagine what could have happened. Hope the others are ok.

Still no cam - and no links for past 2 weeks.
I only checked a few days ago and it was LIVE.
One chick was fledging up to the roof,
the other 2 were ok.

I suppose they took cam offline due to this chick

La Crosse Falcon update

June 22 weekend - the kids were stretching their wings out in the nest, but had not ventured out to the edge.

June 24 - July 3 - I was traveling

July 3-4 - saw 2 kids on the church steeple, and one parent at the bank, then at the church

July 5 - we were out walking and a parent and 2 kids flew over us

July 6 - could hear the falcons but could not see them

Today, July 7 - 2 kids flying around a lot this morning

Have only seen one parent and 2 kids at a time since I’ve been back from the trip. Hoping the 3rd kid is okay.

DEATH of ALMA chick
July 26, 2024
Inconclusive. It wasn't killed by HPAI. But it also wasn't killed by something physical as far as they could tell - it didn't have injuries consistent with electrocution (in this case, lightning striking near the nest box) and obviously didn't collide with anything. It also didn't appear to have the hematomas I associate with black fly bites and wasn't emaciated.

Still kind of wondering about blackflies since they were so bad, but the long and short is that we don't know. Plant contact reports that the rest of the family is doing well.
