Thanks DEF - That's great news, especially since we should see the first chick emerge around May 19 or 20. :loveshow:

Derbyshire Kestrels -located in a barn, at Povey Farm, near Dronfield- UK
5 eggs
May 1 (egg 1) May 5 (egg 3) May 9 (egg 5)
May 3 (egg 2) May 7 (egg 4)

Each year a pair of kestrels visits our farm. They nest in one particular hole and hatch chicks. So we hope they will oblige again this year and we can show you the inside world of the kestrels and see some very interesting footage.

Our bird camera is positioned above the nest in the wall overlooking the farmyard.

There are cams on 3 kestrel nests in Italy via the forum. There are Hola and Simone with all the chicks now hatched :spingirl:
Image

We've returned to a nest we monitored a couple of years ago - Claudia and ICS (some of you may remember it). There's a new pair of kestrels in it but we've decided to keep the same names. There are 5 eggs in the nest but the female seems reluctant to incubate and hasn't been sitting very much in the last couple of days, although I think she's staying very close to the nest - I often see a movement just off camera when I go to that nest
Image

We've also returned to the Malpighi school where Rebecca and Nembo have always nested. There's a pair of kestrels nesting there again this year and there are already 5 eggs. The male will be new (we're discussing his name) but we haven't been able to confirm the female is Rebecca (it would be lovely if it was her). Unfortunately, the cam's off this weekend and apologies for the quality of the picture at present. We hope to get the picture sorted out asap (both for quality and to get the cam working again). Please let us know if you think the female is Rebecca or a new one.

I love following the nests but when things aren't quite right, it's frustrating that I can't do anything because I'm not close. I can imagine how it must be for those of you who live in countries much bigger than Italy!!!

Thanks for the update on the nests, Warbler...I wonder why there is no incubation? I swear, this has been the strangest nesting season...

There's just been an update on this situation on the Italian forum. Carlo say it seems that the female may not be well - she seems to stagger, breathe heavily and she's certainly not incubating. The male has been seen but he's not incubating (male kestrels here don't seem to like incubating  )

Naliza caught this snap of the female asleep on the edge of nest. Unfortunately, no-one can get to the nest until Tuesday but we'll be monitoring the situation in the meantime. There's probably not much hope for the eggs, unfortunately :-( .

that is such a shame...I am more worried about the female...after watching Gulf Towers where the first laid eggs sat for days and days without incubation (and they hatched!!!), these eggs may still be viable.

Can anything be done to help the female?

Warbler - Thanks for the updates on the nests in Italy. It is sad, though, to hear the news about the female kestrel in Claudia & ICS nest. I do hope that she's OK and that the eggs are somehow OK too.

It's hard to get a chick count here! I can't tell if it's 4 chicks and 2 eggs, or 5 chicks and 1 egg. :?
