Bad news from the netherlands Kestrel, one of the chicks did not make it. Cruel but nature the mother and chicks ate it. this chick was the youngest and as you can see in highlights on my site was staying behind.

So a warning for cruel images, but all part of nature, eating of the chick:

Lots of news today - it's just too bad that it wasn't all good!

richardoe - Sorry to hear of the loss of one chick in your nest.

Warbler - Thanks for the good news about Rebecca's first chick hatching.

KF - Thanks for the good news about the Dorset eggs starting to hatch. And thanks too for all the pictures this afternoon.

FYI - The "European Kestrels" topic has been renamed "International Kestrels" because it now covers not only the Common Kestrel found in Europe but also the Lesser Kestrel found in Israel and the Middle East.

Hi Feather! Skygirlblue is correct - that's the female Common Kestrel. She has more striping on her back than the male does.

If you go to the following topic, you'll find a description and picture of both the male and the female together in Muttenz, Switzerland, nest box.

By the way, I've been assuming that your kestrels in Belarus are Common Kestrels. Is that correct...or are they Lesser Kestrels?

Hi, skygirlblue and Catbird :)

Thank you both for the explanation! Catbird, thanx for the link. This female differs so much from our female. Her mantle pattern looks very much like a normal male's one. And our female from Brest is so much more streaked than spotted unlike this female. It is interesting!:)

Our two males continues supply food to the nest in together:

It looks as if at least 4 chicks have hatched here!

Feather - Thanks for posting the pictures of the two males at your Belarus nest. The difference in their tail feather markings is very striking - no problem telling the two males apart here!
