Beth, do you think everything is okay here (MN loons)?

Good question Susan...I am a tad worried

From Larry's blog today: 6/3

Yesterday morning was the 28 day mark for the first egg and tomorrow night will be 28 days for the second egg. 28 days is the 'normally accepted time' for incubation of a loon egg. But that can vary all over the place. Some experts say 30 or 31 days. Some say 26 days. So we wait.

Okay, well let's not get worried until Saturday. There's been some stress at this nest and maybe incubation has been delayed a bit.

No hatch yet at MN - Larrys blog says he found an egg in the water and went in and placed it back on the nest. Maybe mom knew this egg was not viable? She sure was off the eggs alot defending the nest against the original loon pair. We will have to see what she does with that egg today, and if the 2nd egg is viable. *fingers crossed*

OK!!! How much more drama can we stand!??!!?

I am just writing a post about there being 3 huge white pelicans swimming near the nest and I look up at the tv just after the loon has gotten off the nest and SEE ONLY ONE EGG!!!

What happened?!?!

I went down to the lake with the binoculars. Just then BOTH loons came flying toward the nest from out in the lake. They landed nearby.

That is when I saw it.

A small dark spot in the water! Could it be the egg FLOATING?!?!?

I could not think of going back out to the nest! I did not want to go back out. But if it was the egg, how could I not?!?!

I tried to make my way out and quietly and quickly as possible.

The loons watched!

They swam close to the nest.

But they did not seem excited. They did not call.

When I got out there, sure enough! It was the egg!!

I quickly scooped it up. Now the loons both started diving!

One swam underwater very close to my legs! I feared a stab but he went by me.

I hurriedly went over to the nest and placed it by the other egg and backed away and started my retreat.

It was then that one of the loons did the penguin dance three times.

They are still near the nest. Hopefully one will get back up soon!

But how much damage was done to the egg by being in the water?

It will be interesting to see how the egg ended up if there is any video of it! Did it get kicked out? I have never seen that happen before, although I know it happens.

Drama! Drama! Drama!

It will be interesting to see how the egg ended up

Here is a pic of the one egg...

Both eggs...

Oh no! Drama here at the loon's nest also? I've been checking in occasionally to see if any chicks have hatched, but I wasn't expecting to hear that one egg was overboard. Thank goodness it's back in the nest now with the other egg.

Well, the egg is back in the nest, however...mom got off to scare away an intruder again, I saw someone doing that walking across the water fast thing they do when they chase something, and has been off the eggs at this writing for 15 mins at least? She is not in cam sight. I think we'll be lucky to get even 1 hatch out of this inexperienced mom. She has been off the eggs for way too long, then the egg in the water for how long? no one knows. Lets see what happens...

It has been a half hour or more now, maybe even 45 mins. And I just saw mom n dad swim close by the nest, then away. I fear she has abandoned the eggs. The funny thing is this morning, I saw her twitch and look unsettled, lifting herself up several times exposing the eggs. I thought perhaps we were going to have a hatch, and that the egg in the water might have been by accident, and was the number 2 egg. Drama! But now I think mom has abandoned. They swam by like not a care in the world, no hurry to get back on egg, etc. Waiting on Larrys comments and observations... :?

PS She has now just come back to the nest, almost knocked an egg off the edge again, but fixed it before sitting back on them. Gone a long time though. Larry must be sweating it with this mom! All this drama on the days the chicks should be hatching!!!

OMG! This is such upsetting news about the MN loons and their eggs. Someone is on the eggs now. Let's hope at least one hatches.

OH geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez....not drama here too...such a shame...

(now don't laugh..I learned this on a Crocodile Hunter episode..) Steve Irwin was talking about croc eggs and that they are porous. I don't know if bird's eggs are also porous..but if they are, that's very bad news for the one that fell in the water, I'm afraid...

My fingers and toes are definitely crossed for at least one hatch...
