The chicks are getting big! They should start fledging in about a week.

Image

England - Aston

Two chicks are still in the nest. This was reported on the blog today: "A fledgling crash-landed 2 days ago. Unhurt but confused, it was successfully returned to the nest and now seems determined to stay there!"

Italy - Rebecca & Cirro

Four hungry chicks getting fed.

Rebecca and Cirro's chicks will be ringed tomorrow morning (Saturday 19 June). Unfortunately, I won't be there but as soon as I get information about them I'll post it  .

Here are the details of Rebecca and Cirro's chicks, which hatched between 30 May and 4 June. The last to hatch died on 8 June:
Name: Rugantino
Ring No: H 183065
Weight: 241 gm
Wing: 135 mm

Name: Ottavio
Ring No: H 183064
Weight: 232 gm
Wing: 116 mm

Name: Fred
Ring No: H 183063
Weight: 203 gm
Wing: 121 mm

Name: Ramon
Ring No: H 183062
Weight: 198 gm
Wing: 106 mm

The little one is almost certainly a male (the tail feathers indicate that) and he's certainly feisty. It's difficult to say for the others but there's probably at least one other male (I commented that there seemed to be a lot of male peregrine chicks this year but the same seems to apply to the kestrels. I wonder what it means in terms of Nature  ).

This is the link to a slide show of the ringing. You can see that the chicks are anything but afraid, in fact they seem curious about the people who are holding them  :
http://www.slide.com/r/364lkd1X4D_PxcTI ... w=original

And here's a short video of Giac, the ringer, going to the nestbox to put the chicks back:

A big thanks to Giac and Passera who arranged the ringing and to those who managed to go.

Warbler - Thanks so much for posting the information, slides, and video of the ringing of Rebecca and Cirro's chicks! It was so nice to see the beautiful neighborhood and building where the nest is. And it was especially nice to see the cute little chicks - they seemed so calm through all of it, but then it looked to be very low key without a big crowd.

Please thank Giac and Passera for us, and please thank the photographer(s) who were there to document it!

And then there were two kestrel chicks left. Or is it one chick and an adult? :?

England - Oxfordshire

Looks like two have fledged and two remain.
